Dialogue on rights of women and gays

Human rights and sexual diversity were the central themes of a public forum held October 14 at the Centro Cultural de Axixic.

The program drew a sizeable crowd of villagers spanning all generations interested in discussing issues that directly affect their family lives.

Feminist lawyer Maria Guadalupe Ramos Ponce, representative of the Latin American Committee for the Defense of Women’s Rights, opened the forum with a short talk on  recent reforms in the Mexican Constitution and the amparo law that provides stronger guarantees for people discriminated against based on their gender or sexual orientation. Karla Grajeda, spokesperson for the lesbian activist group, followed with a presentation on the gay rights movement in Mexico.

Other guest speakers included a middle-aged Ajijic mother who gave a testimonial on her process of accepting a homosexual child and a younger woman who recounted her experience in discovering a non-traditional sexual identity. A question-and-answer period encouraged audience participation and an open dialogue on common concerns among those in attendance.
