Lakeside shoppers can pick up a wide array of Pan American Games souvenirs at convenience stores and the area’s big box supermarkets.
The special section set up just inside the entrance to Walmart stands out for the greatest variety of commemorative goods, including key chains, shopping bags, coffee mugs, caps, umbrellas and beach towels.
Among the hottest items seem to be figures representing the whimsical Pan Am mascots Gavo, Huichi and Leo, manufactured in diverse shapes, sizes and materials. What may most appeal to consumers searching for a keepsake with a unique Mexican cache are handmade piñatas depicting the mascots. Produced by Moldeados de Carton Jamay, a cottage industry based in the east end lakeshore town of Jamay, they are formed out of recycled cardboard collected in that community and nearby Ocotlan.
The piñatas are available both at Walmart and the regional craft outlet located several doors north of Chapala city hall, with a going price of 120 pesos for the compete body figures and 110 pesos for the head-only forms.
