The annual worldwide simultaneous dance to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” is coming to Lakeside.
“Thrill the World” takes place Saturday, October 29, 9 p.m. on the Chapala Malecon in front of the Beer Garden restaurant.
Hundreds of cities on five continents have registered for an event that breaks its own participation record year after year.
Those unfamiliar with the dance and its steps will have a chance to catch up at a workshop on Saturday, October 22, 2-4 p.m. at Centro Cultural Ajijic on the Ajijic plaza. Registration for the dance and the workshop is 50 pesos. There will also be a flexible schedule of additional rehearsals to learn the steps. “Old-timers” say that it’s easy and thousands of “Zombies” (the popular name for Thriller dancers) all over the world have already managed it.
Besides breaking a world record, the event is a fundraiser for Cruz Roja Chapala. Those who would like to participate but aren’t quite ready to take their inner Michael Jackson public, can find a Zombie to sponsor. Any donation will be welcome. There will be personnel accepting donations for Cruz Roja at the event.
“Experiencing the event itself is ‘thrilling’ for both dancers and on-lookers,” says dance promoter Elliott Joachim. “It is, after all, an attempt to top a world record, dancing with a crowd of people, knowing that thousands of other people all over the world are dancing at the same time. Of course, the audience whooping it up also helps the excitement and fun.”
