The United States Consulate General in Guadalajara (USCG) has issued a warning to U.S. citizens about a “grandparent scam.”
The USCG Guadalajara has received reports from victims of where elderly family members residing in the U.S. are phoned and informed that their relative, usually an adult grandchild, niece or nephew has been arrested overseas and needs financial assistance to be wired as soon as possible. The USCG Guadalajara encourages American citizens to pass information regarding this scam to family members in the U.S. who may be targeted. Visit the State Department’s website for more information on the grandparent scam and other international financial scams.
