As the Northern Lights Festival de Febrero entered its final week, a sellout audience at the opulent Moon Estate basked in the glow of two New York musicians, violinist Benjamin Bowman and cellist Joel Noyes, in a concert that seemed to epitomize the series, now 14 years old.
A chorus line of nuns, dressed in full clerical garb, kick off the Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) musical for Season 51. “Nunsense,” one of off-Broadway’s biggest successes, ran for 3,672 performances from 1982 to 1993. By the time it closed it had been translated into 21 languages with more than 5,000 productions worldwide. Writer/composer Dan Goggin followed it with six sequels featuring the zany antics of “The Little Sisters of Hoboken.”
One of the more ingenious presentations of the Northern Lights Festival de Febrero is set for Friday, March 4, 7:30 p.m., when Patricia O’Callaghan, a versatile Toronto singer described as both masterful and tender, takes the stage at Auditorio de la Ribera with her longtime collaborators The Gryphon Trio, a well-known, Canadian piano trio that is said to be “redefining chamber music for the 21st century.”
Northern Lights
The Northern Lights Festival de Febrero continues with classical and jazz concerts by renowned international musicians almost daily through March 5.
As the highlight of this year’s Northern Lights Festival de Febrero, renowned Australian-born pianist David Fung will perform Saturday, February 27, at Ajijic’s acoustically remodeled Auditorio de la Ribera, joining distinguished conductor Mark Skazinetsky and a 19-member orchestra for Dimitri Shostakovich’s lush, technically demanding Piano Concerto No. 1 with Strings and Trumpet.
Julian Rachlin, one of the world’s most renowned violinists, will grace the Northern Lights Festival de Febrero in Ajijc, which opens its 14th season on Saturday, February 20 and runs through March 5.
