Chinatown to China world: Is Guadalajara turning Chinese?

Tacos with hoisin sauce? A decade ago the idea would have been unthinkable. Now such a combination is just one of the many ways Mexico and China are becoming increasingly attached. The two countries, as culturally unlike as they are geographically distant, have started to bond thanks to various cultural and economic exchanges. Recent examples include Mexico’s high-profile exhibits at last year’s World Trade Expo in Shanghai and Chinese drinkers growing taste for Grupo Modelo’s Corona beer brand.

As China – the most populous country in the world – becomes the most important industrial and technological power, Mexico’s gaze has inevitably started to shift away from its northern neighbor and toward the Asian giant.

While slow to embrace Chinese culture at first, Guadalajara is now fully committed to the new relationship.
