Mendoza works out of an office in a quiet street in Guadalajara’s Colonia Moderna and has two stores in major shopping malls. But she is frequently in the limelight these days as the designer of men’s and women’s clothing worn by Mexico’s first families and as a member of trade groups traveling to China, Europe and elsewhere.
“Even though my contribution might have been small, it is a great satisfaction to me that people in other countries know more about Mexican culture because of my work,” she says, pointing to clothing she has designed that bears motifs such as Frida Kahlo’s paintings or Orozco’s “Man of Fire.”
