Celebrate patriotic days with food, fun, friends

There may be not be a parade in the Lake Chapala area this Fourth of July season but there’s fun a-plenty for those who want to get into the patriotic spirit.

The fun starts on Monday, July 2, when all nationalities can enjoy the joint U.S. Independence Day and Canada Day celebration at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) from noon to 5 p.m.  You can rock to the sounds of the Tall Boys Band, while Roberto’s Restaurant will provide hot dogs, hamburgers, ribs and all the trimmings. A number of non-profit groups will be promoting their organizations. Tickets sold at the door cost 150 pesos; pre-sold they are 80 pesos.

There are many options on July 4 itself, including special meals provided by several Chapala area restaurants.

American Legion Post Seven (Morelos 114, Chapala) host its traditional U.S. Independence Day picnic, beginning at 1 p.m.

The menu includes fried chicken, corn on the cob, potato salad and chocolate topped ice cream.

Tickets are available at the Legion for 120 pesos each. The telephone number is 765-2259.

The Lake Chapala Shrine Club “Loco Motive” Unit is sponsoring a traditional Fourth of July “All You Can Eat Hot Dog Fiesta” at the old train station museum in Chapala (Gonzalez Gallo 1500).  The event runs from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are 100 pesos each.

Expect all-beef hotdogs and all the trimmings of mustard, onions, sauerkraut and ketchup. Cold drinks can be purchased from the cash bar.

The proceeds from this fundraiser will help build a landscaped stone base for a permanent exhibit of the model trains donated to the Shrine Club by the model builder David Netherton. The party will feature an exhibit and running demonstration of the model trains and Netherton will be on hand with an interactive discussion on the history of the 1920s Chapala to Guadalajara railroad.

Tickets are available at the O&A; Investment Office (across the road from Walmart). You can also get them by calling 766-4481, finding ticket vendors at the Wednesday tianguis in Ajijic or from Perry King at 763-5126.

The more adventurous can take a cruise on Lake Chapala in the Batur boat and raise funds for the Love in Action Children’s Center at the same time. Boarding begins at 5:30 p.m. at the east end of the malecon in Chapala. Departure is slated for 6:30 p.m. and the cruise returns at 9:30 p.m.

Tickets are only 250 pesos per person and include a free drink, dance music and fireworks. Additional beer is 15 pesos and margaritas and wine are just 30 pesos per drink. There will be dance music and fireworks.
