Dusty blueprints to help design Chapala biking trail

Six students from ITESO University have dug up 95-year-old blueprints for the train tracks that once upon a time led to the old station in Chapala.

The students plan to use the find to help the Vias Verdes project—a statewide plan to build biking trails over the pathways of unused railroad tracks. Project managers were planning to use old descriptions and conjecture to lay out the route to Chapala as the rails are long gone, but now they will be able to replicate the track closely.

The railroad to Chapala was the brainchild of Norwegian Paul Christian Schjetnan. The project was completed in 1920, but ran for just six years until a flood and a new paved road from Guadalajara bankrupted his company.
