Grand bazaar A yard sale to benefit the Niños Incapacitados takes place at the Roca Azul home of Jan McKernan, Saturday, April 13, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The sale replaces Jimmy Kaye's Yard Sale that has been canceled this year.
Donations of items are urgently needed to make the sale a success, so start searching your closets now for unwanted items and take them to Vickie at the Auditorium in La Floresta, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Remember, any usable item is acceptable.
Triple Crown races
The Niños Incapacitados will also benefit from proceeds from the three benefit parties held to coincide with the running of the Triple Crown horse races. First up is the Kentucky Derby May 4 at the Quinta Quetzalcoatl, or the Inn of the Plumed Serpent, where D.H. Lawrence lived during the 1920s while writing his novel "The Plumed Serpent." This sublime property, which has been featured in many publications, is located just one block from the lakefront at Zaragoza 309, between Ramon Corona and Niños Heroes in the heart of Chapala. Thanks to Barbi and Bill Henderson for opening up their delightful villa and gardens for this charitable event.
The Preakness, the second leg of the Triple Crown, is run May 18, when the party will be held at the new home of Richard and Shirley Aco at Zaragoza 220 in Ajijic, a half-block from Rio Zula. The Belmont, the third and final leg of the Triple Crown, can be seen June 8 at the home of Averial and Richard Miller at Rio Amazones 44 in Rancho Del Oro.
Admission to all race parties includes lunch and a cash bar featuring mixed and soft drinks. At each race, a cocktail featuring a regional specialty from where the race is run -- Mint Juleps from Kentucky, for example -- will be served. With entertainment also on the menu, as well as a raffle and door prizes, these Triple Crown parties get better and more popular each year. Tickets cost 100 pesos per person per race, or 250 pesos per person for all three races. They can be obtained at the Lake Chapala Society or Realty Executives of Ajijic at Carretera 60A.

Lutheran Fellowship
Foreign and Mexican residents are invited to a gathering and salad luncheon Friday, April 12, Noon to explore ways in which the Lakeside Lutheran Fellowship can contribute more fully to the welfare of the community. The Fellowship is going all out to attract new members and develop fellowship groups, bible studies and outreach services. The group meets regularly for bible study at the Little Chapel; currently they are studying the Old Testament books of Samuel.
The gathering on April 12 is open to anyone interested. The location is Miguel Blanco 7, between Constitucion and 16 de Septiembre, on the northbound one-way street leading to the Ajijic Hospital Center. Information is available from Ron or Mary Harrington, 766-4242, or Dana or Jerry Hesser, 766-1367.
Adios
We were saddened to learn that due to family health reasons, longtime Ajijic residents Leon and Jeanie Adkins Peine will be leaving the area and returning to live in the United States. Both will be sorely missed. Jeanie's expertise in public relations brought her many nominations for "Woman of the Year," and she was given the "Link" award at the 1999 Community Awards ceremony. She will be remembered, too, for her famous, fun bus trips to various locations, and for her work on behalf of the community as a member of the Chapala American Legion Post Seven Women's Auxiliary. Leon Peine was also a prominent and hard working member of American Legion Post Seven, and was dedicated to the maintenance of the expatriate cemetery in Chapala. He kept a plot map and was always available for anyone wanting to locate a loved one's resting place. The couple say they hate to leave and plan to return often for visits.
Baby Paulini fundraiser
More than 275 people answered the call to help Matthew Paulini, who was born January 29 with Apalasia Cutis Congenita, a life-threatening congenital scalp defect.
The event was organized by friends of parents Nick and Dee Paulini to help defray the mounting cost of hospital and medical care for Matthew, who has been receiving round-the-clock care since his birth.
Held at Melanie's Restaurant, Friday, March 22, the musical evening featured the South of the Border Gang, Ellis Island and Mirage. At the end of the affair, some 26,000 pesos had been raised through donations and an auction led by Flip Nicholson.
Yard sale
A yard sale to benefit the Lakeside School for the Deaf will be held in front of Lloyd in Ajijic, 9 a.m., Saturday, April 13. Drop-off point for items prior to the sale is the home of Jack and Shirley West at Aldama 29 in Ajijic. Available for purchase now is a range of clothing, accessories, shoes, pottery and other items, but more donations are needed to make the sale a success.
A voucher good for 350 pesos in purchases will be given to anyone making a donation of 300 pesos in advance of the sale. Donations for vouchers may be made in increments of 300 pesos only and no change will be given for unused portions of the voucher. To purchase vouchers contact Leeta Jordan at 766-1109 or [email protected].

LCS will provide tables and chairs, but exhibitors must furnish their own easels or special equipment. Apply to participate at the LCS office, or by e-mail to [email protected].

A portion of the 250-peso donation for the screening will be given to the Casa Ancianos (Chapala home for the elderly). It is important to remember that not only women but men can suffer from bone loss and require treatment. The testing will be done using the most modern equipment and the results will be immediately available. Testing will begin 10 a.m. and continue until everyone has been screened. Prior sign up in the LCS office is required.
