Spring

Those of you expecting what many of you refer to as one of my “rants” are going to be disappointed this week. While life, even here, has its share of irritations (usually in the form of other expats and their lack of sensitivity), there is no denying the bounty of life and color that bursts forth (waxing a little poetic here) around Lake Chapala in the early spring.

It comes as something of a surprise, as winter here isn’t the bare-branched, frozen bleakness many of us lived with before we were smart enough or lucky enough to end up in central Mexico. We don’t have to wait for spring to have bright sunlight, leafy shade, blue skies and roses. When the real thing hits it’s breathtaking.

Suddenly, everything is blooming. Trees that looked like crooked sticks a couple of weeks ago are draped with abundant purple or bright yellow or cotton candy pink. Though there is always some birdsong, spring brings the arias and squawks of a hundred species of feathered creatures. Butterflies on their way somewhere stop to sip on vines and warm afternoons give way to the cool, translucent light of sunset.

The term “paradise” used by many of my contemporaries when describing this corner of the world is probably over the top – but not by much.
