Watch your purse

One of the first harbingers of the holiday season is a rash of purse- and wallet-napping. It appears that 2011 won’t be an exception. Several phone calls from distressed residents reveal that those very clever thieves are already at work.

Sometimes the entire purse is gone and sometimes only the important stuff like cash and essential documents turn up missing.

It’s easy to believe that we’re living in paradise. The perfect weather, the flowers, the polite population – but leaving your purse in the baby carrier of the cart while your attention is on your shopping list is just plain crazy.

The same goes for leaving your purse on the outdoor table of the restaurant while you peruse the indoor salad bar. Letting your wallet stick up out of your back pocket is like putting a sign out saying, “Take me, take me.”

It’s hard to get used to but when shopping, take only your money, the list and, of course, your car keys.  Keep the money as close to you as you can (some people wear money belts made from old pantyhose and other materials). And don’t leave your purse on the front seat of your car, thus creating an attractive target. Lock it in the trunk. If you must carry the entire purse and all of your valuables into the supermarket – hang on to it!

Remember dear old Dad’s sage advice: “Keep your knees crossed and your hand on your wallet.” It will serve you well.
