Tougher times for drunk drivers

Thanks to 140 new recruits, the Salvando Vidas anti drunk-driving program (el Torito) kicked off a new era last weekend, substantially increasing the numbers of drivers breathalyzed and DUI transgressors sent to sober up in jail.

The Jalisco Transportation Department (Semov) reported that a record 5,127 breath tests were carried out during late-night checks on Friday and Saturday in Guadalajara, with 119 drivers testing above the legal limit.

Of these, 82 were taken away to the cells at the Centro Urbano de Retención Vial por Alcoholimetría (CURVA) to languish for up to 36 hours, while 37 received a ticket and fine.
