12 Jalisco athletes prepare for Rio Paralympic Games

A contingent of 12 athletes from Jalisco will participate in the Rio de Janeiro Paralympic Games September 7-18.

A team of five swimmers will be headed by Guadalajara’s Arnulfo Castorena, 38, who won gold medals in Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004, and two bronzes in London 2012.  He will be competing  in his fourth paralympics.

Judokas Eduardo Ávila and Lenia Ruvalcaba – winners of gold and silver medals respectively in Beijing 2008 – will again be representing Jalisco and Mexico in Rio.

Two visually impaired participants from Jalisco also made the team: Mónica Olivia Rodríguez in athletics and Felipe Arana in soccer. Others heading to Rio are José Abraham Estrada Sierra in paratriathlon, José de Jesús Castillo in powerlifting and Ángel Moisés Enríquez Torres, who suffers from cerebral palsy and will take part in athletics events.

Mexico is taking a team of 66 competitors to Brazil, smaller than its contingent of 81 that went to London four years ago. In those Paralympic Games, Mexico finished 23rd in the medal table with six golds, four silver and 11 bronze medals.
