Jalisco governor, other public servants to loose immunity from prosecution

Jalisco legislators voted Thursday to amend articles in the state Constitution that currently give hundreds of public officials immunity from criminal prosecution.

The law change means that more than 1,500 officials, including the state governor, attorney general, cabinet members, mayors and city councilors, will no longer be able to claim protection under the constitution if they are accused of a crime.

However, because it requires a change to the state constitution, the measure must be approved by more than half of Jalisco’s 125 municipal council chambers.
