State lawmakers nix assisted dying bill

Jalisco lawmakers have binned an assisted dying bill that would have given people with terminal illnesses a greater say in how they live out their final days.

Its promoter, Roberto Mendoza, lamented the fact that his colleagues had failed to recognize the topical relevance of the issue.

Roman Catholic leaders had been skeptical about the bill, questioning whether it could lead to the legalization of euthanasia.
