False alarm on Scorpion Island

Law enforcement authorities mounted a futile search and rescue operation early Tuesday, October 11, after a Chapala fisherman reported spotting human remains floating in the waters surrounding the Isla de Alacranes.

A team of police and forensic investigators docked at the Chapala pier empty-handed following a three-hour nautical inspection of the area.

The purported sighting of a severed leg comes the wake of the recovery of more than a dozen mutilated bodies discovered in Lake Chapala and the Rio Lerma since the end of September, including a corpse that washed up on shore near Mezcala just this week. Attorney General Eduardo Almaguer has announced the detention of several suspects connected to the investigation of a kidnapping-mass murder case attributed to organized crime cells operating near the boundaries between Jalisco and Michoacan.
