Ajijic hit by spike in expat home burglaries

Foreign residents in the Ajijic area have been put on high alert by a rash of recent home burglaries, including at least two home invasions in which victims were held at gunpoint.

This newspaper has verified the two armed robberies that occurred in Rancho del Oro, in addition to collecting anecdotal accounts of four break-ins reported in the same vicinity, La Canacinta and the east end of the village, all over the last six weeks. Several of the burglaries are tied to sightings of a white compact car.

The harrowing story revealed by one of the victims describes the home invasion gang as three young men “neatly dressed, attractive, well-built and very friendly,” none of whom spoke English.

The woman continued, “We were coming home from an outing with our dogs and noticed a white sedan parked in front of our home. A young man was coming from our gate door getting in the car. As we approached our home the car pulled towards us as if they were leaving the area. As we passed the car my husband asked if they needed some help. Our Spanish is very limited so we were unable to understand what they were saying. We said adios and came on home. Shortly after arriving home there was a knock at our gate and as my husband gently opened the gate to see who was there. Two of the men shoved their way in, holding a gun to my husband’s head, telling him to be quiet. The third man waited in the car.”

The man with the gun ordered her husband to close the dogs in a bedroom, proceeding to strip the couple of their wedding bands and other valuables on their persons. His younger partner went through the house gathering electronics, jewelry and cash.
