Green letter day for Ajijic waterfront

The Ajijic waterfront is bursting with new life following the massive reforestation project carried out Saturday, June 18.

With volunteers from the village working shoulder to shoulder with a crew of Chapala government employee, 191 new trees were planted along the western leg of the malecón and the beach area stretching  beyond to the Tecoluta soccer field.

The initiative was put together by the town’s new Delegado Chuni Medeles and local businessman Tom Thompson, in coordination with the municipality’s Ecology Director Rafael Aguilar and Parks and Gardens Director José Luis Hernández, who supplied the new plantings and plenty of manpower. Local folks pitched in with elbow grease and refreshments during the three-hour green-in.

Flowering and fruit-bearing species were included in the variety of trees that went into the ground to provide shady cover and extra oxygen to the area, Aguilar explained. Several dozen young pines were planted in two parallel rows to create a verdant walkway growing at the far end of the beach.

Thompson, the mastermind of the Jardin Internacional sculpture garden, pointed out that the work included the removal of several dead trees that appear to have been purposely killed by neighbors who don’t want tall plantings to block their lake views.

According to Medeles, the Delegación office is issuing stern warnings to homeowners whose properties look out over the waterfront, advising them that anyone caught damaging the saplings will be prosecuted. Citizens who detect suspicious behavior that could be detrimental to the newly enhanced green areas are encouraged to alert Medeles and his staff in person or at 766-1760.
