Transgender shelter opens

The first shelter in Mexico dedicated to providing attention to transgender people has opened in Guadalajara.

The shelter will provide medical, legal and psychological support, said the facility’s president Izack Zacarías.

Casa Impulso Trans has been operating for about two months and has treated around 20 people so far, most of them from the north of Mexico.

Most have “emotional complications,” Zacarías says, and many have been “rejected by their families.”

Specialists at the shelter provide advice about appropriate treatments, while lawyers can help with the complicated task of changing a person’s legal gender or name to reflect their gender identity , a process that currently can only be done in Mexico City.

Reports suggest that since 2015, 400 people from Jalisco have traveled to the capital to modify their birth certificates
