Gated community forced to share road with Joe Public

In a rare move, a private avenue in a ritzy Zapopan gated community has been opened up to public traffic, although some wealthy neighbors are far from happy about the decision.

Following the installation of a new 260-meter stretch of tarmac, Avenida Paseo Royal, which cuts through the Royal Country subdivision near Plaza Andares, now links Avenida Patria and Juan Palomar y Arias.  The road provides motorists with another important option in this heavily trafficked residential zone, Zapopan officials say.

The Royal Country neighborhood association finally gave up its strong opposition to the plan to make the avenue a public thoroughfare after receiving promises from Zapopan authorities that it would be meticulously maintained at the municipality’s expense.

Some neighbors, however, are angry at being forced to share the avenue with Joe Public. Having paid out of their own pockets for 30 years to maintain the road, they have expressed their disappointment with the municipality’s investment of just 4.8 million pesos to finish the new stretch.

Neighbors are concerned about pedestrian safety on the now public road and insist Zapopan city hall keeps its word and installs speed bumps and other safety infrastructure.
