Forced haircut for students deemed human rights abuse

The students were shorn of their locks en masse during the first week of classes at the Escuela Tecnica 122 in the Guadalajara suburb of Tonala.  They each had to fork out ten pesos for the pleasure.

Teodoro Guzmán Pérez defended himself saying that parents and students had agreed to the haircut plan when they signed the school’s inscription form.

Nonetheless, state education authorities ruled that the school director had overstepped his authority and abused the students’ human rights.

According to Jalisco Education Secretary Francisco Ayón, Guzmán Pérez will be transferred to another position with the public schools system and be obliged to take a course in human rights.

Some parents have petitioned Ayon to allow Guzmán Pérez to stay in his job.

Jalisco Human Rights Commission (CEDH) Director Jesús Álvarez Cibrián said the incident should serve as a lesson to teacher throughout the state.  Students have a right to be kept informed of all decisions that affect their physical wellbeing.
