Tapatio racer on Ferrari’s radar

Guadalajara Formula One racer Sergio “Checo” Perez obtained his second podium finish in three races at last Sunday’s European Grand Prix in Baku, Azerbaijan, kicking off rumors that the next step in his career could a seat with the famed Ferrari team.

Perez finished an astonishing third after qualifying in second place but starting seventh on the grid due to a penalty resulting from a gearbox change following a crash in practice.

Now in his sixth year in F1, the 26-year-old Force India driver is enjoying his best ever season. While still only in eighth place in the standings on 39 points, Perez has shown tremendous skill in getting results from a car that few experts believed would make any impact in this year’s championship.

Perez is a former member of Ferrari’s academy and started out with Ferrari-powered Sauber in 2011.

Force India bosses say they are convinced Perez will stay with them for the 2017 season but after his third-place finish in Baku, the driver said it was “too early in the season” to make any decisions about his future.
