Bejeweled

Just in time for that sweetheart of a day, New York jewelry designer June Rosen Lopez is hosting her Third Annual Valentine’s Day Party on February 11 and 12, 1-8 p.m. at her home gallery in the Romantic Zone on the corner of Pino Suarez and Francisca Rodriguez. This will be a great chance to view her collection of custom-made jewelry.

In Mexico, Valentine Day’s is known as “El Día del Amor y la Amistad,” which means love and friendship day and celebrates all relationships, including family, friends and lovers.

For the last few years Rosen has used this holiday to focus on the heart shape and has enjoyed using this symbol in her delightfully original jewelry. Realizing that not everyone likes hearts, her Valentine’s collection this year contains a wide variety of styles. She is adding jewelry pieces influenced by her travels over the past year.

Rosen’s first started making jewelry in 1973 and has always believed in classic jewelry that is affordable, wearable and that never goes out of style.

Presidential Fun

The infamous Kinsey Sicks premiere an updated version of their hilarious musical comedy hit, “Electile Dysfunction,” on the main stage at Act II Stages, on the corner of Insurgentes and Basilio Badillo on February 10, 11, 13 and 16. All performances start at 9:30 p.m. Tickets from 350 pesos can be purchased through VallartaTickets.com.

See Rachel, Trampolina, Trixie and Winnie as they campaign to become the first Dragapella Quartet to be elected president of the United States on the Republican ticket. There are plenty of jokes and songs.

The Kinsey Sicks are an a cappella quartet who bill themselves as America’s Favorite Dragapella Beauty Shop Quartet. They perform both original music and lyrics as well as parodies of well-known songs. Their shows are both comedic and highly politically charged. Their name is a play of words on “Kinsey 6,” the end of the Kinsey scale defined as exclusively homosexual.

The Kinsey Sicks began in 1993 when a group of five friends (mostly lawyers and professional activists) attended a Bette Midler concert in San Francisco dressed as the Andrews Sisters. Assuming they’d be among many drag queens, they were actually the only ones. That night they were approached by a woman who asked them to perform at her 50th birthday party. Though their initial response was, “We don’t sing,” the group was surprised to learn that they all had previous musical experience. The rest is history.

Haunted Tour

There’s a new tour in town. It is called the Legends of Vallarta and you’ll get a chance to explore Puerto Vallarta’s downtown streets, the Rio Cuale Island, the Market, the Presidencia (City Hall) and many other mysterious places at night.

The tour is organized by the Histrionic Theater Group of Zacatecas and led by The Devil and his family of followers. They will share amazing stories, legends and anecdotes about all the places visited. This fabulous tour is quickly becoming a success, since its something very different.

It starts off at the Seahorse (Caballito) statue on the Malecón and takes you through the shadowy streets and some enigmatic places in El Centro, every day except Tuesday. There are two tours daily. Departures are scheduled at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. This is, for the most part, a walking tour. Sometimes, however, a ride on the Viva Tequila train is included.

The Histrionic Theater Group consists of four stage actors, plus the main character, Emmanuel Arzate, who plays El Diablo/The Devil, an archetypal figure who shares spine-chilling stories of certain beings who continue to pay penitence for past deeds and haunt certain places around town.

Tickets are for sale at the tourist information module near the Hotel Rosita located at the north end of the Malecón. The cost for adults is 150 pesos and 100 pesos for children. If by any chance you don’t make it on time to buy your tickets at the module, just catch up with the tour when its taking off – you can pay them directly.
