Baseball
The La Manzanilla Baseball Club’s annual seven-inning game between the club kids, their coaches, dads and several “old phart” expats took place Saturday, February 28. The mixed teams, Lobos vs Tigers, was a spirited affair. The Lobos leapt out to an early big lead by taking advantage of some Tiger sun glare errors and strong hitting. The Lobos looked to be cooked but they crept back in the mid innings with their own aggressive base running and a few ‘seeing-eye’ drives that went through Lobo gaps to the end of the field. The back and forth featured some crowd pleasing highlights by both the rag tag men, many of whom had not played in years, and the young guns who showed their skills built through the fine coaching led by Patti, Scottie and a host of awesome volunteers throughout the year.
The Tigers settled down and stayed close through awesome fielding. Eleven-year-old Lyle Nery accounted for 3 put-outs from the outfield with fantastic catches, one of which he zipped back into second to double off a base runner. Ceasar was an absolute flash in center field as he ran down everything sent his way to keep the opposing base runners from gaining much ground. Yahir, the Tigers’ 3rd baseman was tenacious in knocking down shots his way and always made the easy out with smart choices. Tiger batters, Caesar, Aziel and Plomo were able to connect with long drives to clean off the bases. After six innings, the Tigers had finally come all the way back from a 3-18 deficit to take a slim one-run lead.
In the top of the seventh and last inning, the Lobos found energy to take back the lead. Stringing together hits by Boca Kim, Luis, Pacho, Terry and Osmar, they soon built a four-run lead mostly by avoiding hits toward the Tiger’s defensive standouts Lyle and Ceasar.
As the bottom of the 7th rolled around, the Lobos needed to stiffen. After the lead off Tiger batter was tossed out at first, it looked like the Lobos might hold. However, the Tigers would not be deterred. With bloops and slow rollers, the Tigers were able to push some runs across. During one scoring play, Yahir did a celebratory flip after crossing the plate. Having no hits to the Lobo outfield and with two outs to spare, the Tigers come back was completed for a 24-23 win!
La Manzanilla’s youth baseball club is a labor of love for Patti Wagner. A fiery red-head with a huge heart, she has a boundless passion for the kids and the game. Cooking with Eileen. Join Eileen in her beautiful kitchen and spend an entertaining two hours creating recipes from the around the world. March 5-18 her menu highlights the Palette of India. Tierralegre School Garden. A project in conjunction with La Manzanilla’s Tierralegre and the local secondary school, this is a working organic garden. Students learn everything about the process from preparation of the plots, composting, seed planting and care, through selling the products. You can buy fresh greens and other organic produce from the garden on Fridays at our weekly market next to the main square.

Through March 15 bring in clothing of good condition and style and either trade it for something on the trade table or buy directly from sale rack where everything is priced between 50-150 pesos. Kirtan Chanting Group. If you love to chant and or sing, come to Casa Luz Tuesdays at 11 a.m. through the end of March. Based on ancient chants, kirtan has the ability to quiet the mind and help you listen with intention.
