Laguna Chapalac - September 24, 2016

Health Presentation

Neurosurgeons Dr. Gabriel Varela and Dr. Ernesto Ledesma will present the lecture, “Suspect Stroke? Go Fast,” Friday, September 23, 2 p.m. in the LCS Sala.

They will discuss appropriate life-saving actions to take when a stroke is suspected, as well as heart care strategies.

Open Circle

Rachel McMillen will present “Back to the Future” at Open Circle on Sunday, September 25, 10:30 a.m. in the garden of the Lake Chapala Society.

Noam Chomsky recently stated that, “It’s a kind of irony that all over the world, the leading forces in trying to prevent a race to disaster are the indigenous communities.” Could it be that the very people we have marginalized are the ones who can save us from ourselves? What can we learn from our original people – and will they agree to teach us?

Rachel McMillen is the author of the Dan Connor mystery series which combines “a hint of politics, a dab of environmental issues, a good dollop of native culture and a full helping of fast-paced action” (Writer’s Weekly). At various times she has been a teacher, a facilitator, an accountant, a business owner and, through all of it, a wife and mother. She and her husband sailed the west coast on their 36’ sailboat for over 30 years.

Genealogy Forum

The Genealogy Forum’s next meeting is Wednesday, September 28, 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon church) in Riberas del Pilar.  Everyone is welcome.

This month Libby Colterjohn will talk about writing her book “Shanghai Loved and Lost.” The book tells the tale of her husband’s family, which lived in Shanghai from 1926 to 1949. Life there went from one of extreme decadence and frivolity to being a prisoner-of-war under the Japanese, and ended with the takeover by the Communists. She will discuss what motivated her to write the book, how she researched both the family history and world events of that period, and how she chose to publish it, both locally and on Amazon. Her book has received excellent reviews.

The Family History Center, also at the Mormon Church, is open on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon. It will also be open at the conclusion of the monthly meeting.

Lakeside British Society

The next Lakeside British Society lunch is Saturday, October 1, 1 p.m. at Manix Restaurant when Lily Walker will be the featured speaker.

Most people show an interest in learning about health and nutrition; after all who doesn’t want to be healthier? However, in the Western world we are bombarded with a lot of confusing and contradictory information, which has led to a rise in ill health and more medication. This talk will cover the health benefits people experience when they switch to a largely plant-centric diet.

The menu is pea soup or a small salad, spinach filled fish roll with an almond sauce, pork chop with mashed potatoes and gravy or a large spinach salad with goat cheese. Dessert is crepes Suzette. The cost is 135 pesos (not including tip). Manix is at Ocampo 57 in Ajijic, and has parking available on an adjacent lot.
