Open Circle

Three highly accomplished musicians —

Lili Laguna, piano, Diana Laguna, violin, and Areli Medeles, cello — will perform a varied program ranging from a classical piano trio sonata favorite to some lighter works sure to please at the next Open circle meeting, Sunday, June 26, 10:30 a.m. in the Lake Chapala Society Garden.

Orphanage fundraiser

A Moroccan dinner prepared by chef Dr. Tony Pino will serve as a fundraiser for the Hope House Orphanage Saturday, June 25, 5 p.m. at the Lake Chapala Baptist Church. The donation is 250 pesos per person. Call Charles Baker at (331) 267-3850.

Genealogy Forum

The Genealogy Forum meets Monday, June 27, 1:30 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Riberas del Pilar. The topic will be free genealogy web sites. Members are urged to bring their favorite sites. 

The Forum will also see the new computers in the Family History Center, which has now reopened on Tuesdays and Thursdays. 

The Genealogy Forum is open to everyone whether new to genealogy or an old hand. There are no dues. Established members are more than willing to lend a helping hand. Call Fran Murphy at (376) 766-0067 for more information.

Fun for critters

An evening of fun and fundraising for Lakeside Spay & Neuter (The Ranch) is planned Wednesday, June 29, 5 p.m. at Adelita Bar & Grill. Cover charge is 50 pesos. 

Festivities include a 50/50 raffle, a sales table and auction and music for dancing. There are special menu prices on Adelita favorites, just for this event: pan-seared salmon, BBQ ribs (whole or half rack) or fettuccine Alfredo (vegetarian). Buddhists

The teaching at Heart of Awareness Buddhist Sangha Wednesday, June 29 will be a reading from Ajahn Sumedho, the senior Western representative of the Thai forest tradition of Theravada Buddhism. Noble Silence begins at 4 p.m., followed at 4:30 p.m. by a formal meditation period, dharma teachings and discussion.

The center is open for hour-long silent meditation periods on Sunday and Monday, June 26 and 27, from 9 to 10 a.m., and Thursday, June 30, from 11 am to noon.  A “Drop-In” Practice/Study group meets every Friday from 2 to 4 p.m.  All are welcome.

A yoga class suitable for all levels of experience is offered at Heart of Awareness on Wednesdays and Saturdays, from 9 to 11 am. A donation of 50 pesos is requested for the class.

The Heart of Awareness is a non-sectarian community grounded in the teachings of the Buddha as preserved in the Theravada/Vipassana tradition.  Prior experience or affiliation is not required.  The sangha’s location is at Guadalupe Victoria 101 in Ajijic. Canada Day

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 1, 904 Wing Royal Canadian Air Force Association and the Canadian Club of Lake Chapala are throwing a party celebrating Canada’s 149th birthday Friday, July 1 at the Nuevo Chapala Club House (Zaragoza 731, Chapala), from noon until 4 p.m. 

On tap will be burgers, hot dogs, door prizes, birthday cake and dancing. 

Easy directions are to go north on the main street of Chapala and turn to the right at the Pemex, then go straight through until you come to a fork in the road, bear right and through by the guardhouse to the club house. 

Tickets available at Fenix Real Estate are 150 pesos per person.

Democrats July 4th

Democrats Abroad welcomes all to an Independence Day picnic, Saturday, July 2, 3-7 p.m. at the Hotel Montecarlo in Chapala. 

Enjoy great American food, music by Jimmy Barto and Noe Raygoza, a cash bar, swimming in a thermal pool, games and more.

British Society

The next Lakeside British Society lunch is Saturday, July 2, 1 p.m. at Manix Restaurant when

Mary Ellen Rushworth from El Corazòn Creativa (The Creative Heart) will speak on “The untapped vast array of skills of Mexican artisans.” El Corazon Creativa store now represents over 50 artisans and Rushworth is gaining interesting insights into the possibilities of this creative community.

Menu choices for the luncheon include zucchini flower soup or a small salad, brisket with mashed potatoes and vegetables, Salmon in a teriyaki sauce with rice and vegetables or cheese and onion pie with salad. Dessert is apple pie and ice cream.

LCS Singles mixer

The LCS Singles group is getting together again and regrouping. The first fun event is planned for Wednesday, July 6, from 5-7 p.m. Happy Hour drinks will be two for one at the LCS Campus. 

Cost is free for members and 20 pesos for non-members. 

This is a great opportunity to get together with a group of fun Lakesiders for a happy hour celebration, before heading out tone of the fine local restaurants nearby.

Querétaro wine trip

Sommelier Rebecca Martin Casa will be leading a journey with the Lake Chapala Society into Mexico’s wine producing region in Querétaro – a three-day excursion experiencing a new vineyard each day. The trip is from Thursday, July 14 to Saturday, July 16. Sign-up at the LCS service office by July 6.

Cost for LCS members is 4,500 pesos double occupancy. Add another 500 pesos for non-members or 1,500 pesos for single occupancy.
