Lucky Dog

The residents waiting at Lucky Dog for a forever home are hosting their 3rd Annual Open House on Sunday, October 25, 1-5 p.m. The pups are anxious for community members to visit, enjoy the afternoon of fun events and see the extensive renovations to the local rescue and adoption shelter just east of Chapala. 

Human volunteers at Lucky Dog will be at the barbeque grilling burgers and manning the no-host bar. A selection of doggie gifts, including toys and warm sweaters for the upcoming cooler winter weather are on display. 

A series of raffle drawings will send two winning guests home with certificates for a dinner for six at either Just Chillin’ or Yves. Tickets will be available at the door. It isn’t necessary to be present to win.

Women’s Disease Support

The Women’s Cancer and Life-Threatening Disease Support Group meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month. The next meeting will be held on Monday, October 26, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is a place for women to find comfort and information from people who really understand what the experience of life-threatening disease. The group is free, facilitated by a professional counselor and open to women in treatment, and recent survivors of serious diseases. Genealogy Forum

The Genealogy Forum will meet on Monday, October 26, 2 p.m. in the LCS Sala. Pamela Ames will give a special presentation on tips and tricks for using the program FamilySearch.org. FamilySearch is the best source for free online genealogy data and is essential for those tracing family history. The program requires some skill and knowledge to find the best information. 

There is no charge to attend or to belong to the group, which meets monthly to share information. 

Fabulous Fun Music

Lakeside’s fun-loving ukulele folks have scheduled a fall singalong featuring Fifty Years of Fabulous Fun Music. The event sponsored by Club Ukulele de Laguna (CUL) is set for Monday, October 26, 5 p.m. at Restaurant Maria Isabel (formerly the Old Posada). 

Audience members will love joining in on songs such as “Five Foot Two,” “Side by Side,” “Blue Moon,” “Sentimental Journey,” ”Don’t Fence Me In,” “Love Me Tender,” “If I Had a Hammer,” “ Blueberry Hill” and “Stand By Me.” 

If you prefer Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan and the Beatles, you’ll find their music in the CUL lineup too. 

There’s an extra layer of fun involved in the sing along. Some folks have decided to don costumes reflecting their favorite musical decade, genre, era or diva. Not the costume type? No problem … costumes are absolutely optional.

There are no tickets and no entrance fee for this event, However, donation baskets will be passed at the intermission to help defray the expenses of CUL’s pet project, the Academia de Ukulele de Laguna. CUL founded the ukulele classes for youngsters in January 2015. The group funds the instruments and pays for the professional instructor to teach the children. This term there are 38 kids learning to play the ukulele in weekly classes. 

New Cooking Class

AbueLinda has set the date for another of her popular Tianguis to Table: Market to Mesa classes. On Wednesday, October 28, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. participants can walk with the chef through the Ajijic tianguis (street market) and learn about the diverse ingredients available and how to use them. Fresh produce, dried chiles, and all sorts of in-season fruits are at shoppers’ fingertips. 

After the market, the group will walk back to the kitchen and prepare a delicious comida corrida (Mexico’s typical three-course lunch). Memory Support 

Lost Keys is a one-hour, weekly support group for people with memory challenges. This safe place unites those trying to come to terms with declining abilities, giving them the chance to laugh over their mistakes, and get tips for managing daily activities. The group is free. LCS Spanish Classes 

The next term of the LCS Spanish language course for LCS members will begin on Monday, November 2 and continue through December. There are two 90-minute class sessions held each week in the Wilkes Education Center (Biblioteca).

The LCS Spanish program uses the Warren Hardy Spanish-language course which is designed for the adult student. Several levels of instruction are available for students as they progress through the program. 

Returning or new students can register for the upcoming classes on line at the LCS website: www.lakechapalasociety.com or in the LCS office during regular office hours. The Spanish Program Manager will be at the LCS campus on the blue umbrella patio daily from Monday, October 26 until Friday, October 30, 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. 

Tuition for the course is 750 pesos and the course textbook is an additional 570 pesos. Other instructional materials may also be purchased separately. For more information about the Spanish classes or LCS membership, visit the LCS website.

Intro to Spanish

LCS members who are beginners at learning Spanish may benefit by taking the casual Introduction to Spanish language class. Classes are held each month beginning on the first Tuesday of each month and then continuing for three weeks. 

The upcoming session will begin on Tuesday, November 3 and will be held from noon until 1:30 p.m. All materials are provided for the students. The class tuition is 175 pesos. 

Class members will learn the Spanish alphabet, simple vocabulary words and phrases that are handy to use around town while shopping. There will also be useful information about lakeside and about Mexican culture.

Donation Coffee

Leslie Martin is hosting a coffee at her home on Wednesday, November 4, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for area women who have quality, very gently used clothing, accessories, shoes, bags and jewelry to donate for the annual December 4 Cocktail and Canape Fashion Auction Show to raise funds for the School for Special Children.

Critter Bash

Supporters and volunteers of the Lakeside Spay and Neuter Dog Ranch are gearing up to host the 14th annual Country Critter Bash on Monday, November 5, 4 p.m. at Paseo del Mirador 14 in La Floresta. 

Tickets for the always popular prime rib dinner (or for those who prefer vegetarian entrée) are 250 pesos and are on sale at Handy Mail, Diane Pearl Colecciones, Pet Care and Mia’s Boutique. There will be a cash bar , music by Sol y Luna, door prizes, a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction. 

Golf Classic Dinner

The 12th Annual Golf Classic set for the Country Club de Chapala on Thursday, November 5 is fully subscribed. It is still possible for area residents to contribute to this worthy cause by attending the fabulous all-you-can eat barbeque dinner at 250 pesos per person. 

Tickets for the dinner are available at the Cruz Roja desk at LCS or at the Country Club de Chapala pro shop. Tickets must be purchased by Wednesday, October 29.

Marine Corps Birthday

A party to celebrate the 240th year of the U.S. Marine Corps is slated for Tuesday, November 10 at Adelita’s Bar and Grill in San Antonio Tlayacapan.

Open Circle

When participants gather for Open Circle at the Lake Chapala Society on Sunday, October 25, 10 a.m., Dr. Connie Davis will talk about the challenges of being a woman doctor working on smallpox eradication in India while confronting the caste system at a time when women were seldom seen beyond their homes. She will recount how local health care providers and World Health Organization’s vaccination coverage was increased from 40 to 80 percent in Senegal in two years, the difficulty of controlling meningitis in Ethiopia during the civil war, how she met Mother Teresa and why she had a private audience with the Dalai Lama.

Davis was born in Chicago, grew up in Walnut Creek, California, and planned to be a pediatrician in the San Francisco Bay area until she had the opportunity to work with International Public Health in Asia and Africa combatting infectious diseases. 

Her book “Searching for Sitala Mata,” describing her experiences during a two-year stint working to eradicate smallpox in India, will be released locally at Restaurant Maria Isabel on Sunday, October 25, 3-5 p.m. 

Christmas at Jaltepec

While the popular Christmas dinner event at the Jaltepec Centro Educativo is already sold out, space is still available for the Wednesday, December 2 luncheon. Savvy lakesiders know that everything from the menu to the entertainment is the same for the luncheon, but midday guests can soak up incredible views of Lake Chapala from the terrace during the noon cocktail hour, and save 100 pesos per person. The luncheon donation is 550 pesos. 

Both meals are prepared and served by the students of the hospitality school. The roast turkey with sausage stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables and apple parfait for dessert is served at 2 p.m.

The afternoon guests will enjoy a taste of Los Cantantes del Lago’s Christmas Concert under the direction of Timothy G. Ruff Welch.
