City Living - April 8, 2016

The effects of caffeine found in drinks widely consumed by adolescents was one of the many themes presented by students at the American School of Guadalajara’s annual Science Fair.

Alejandro Gomez, Mauricio Moel and Natalia Velasco (above) concluded that synthetic caffeine used in energy drinks or soda is more harmful and addictive than that found in coffee or tea because the body absorbs it faster, provoking a more extreme stimulatory effect.  Visitors to the fair learned that consuming more than three 100mg cups of coffee a day not only inhibits sleep but can cause dehydration, given that caffeine acts as a diuretic.

‘Awakenings’ at Amsoc Book Club

The American Society (Amsoc) Book Club Meeting on Thursday, April 21, 10 a.m. will feature an invigorating discussion, lunch and movie.  The subject is “Awakenings” by Oliver Sacks, published in 1973 and made into a movie in 1990 with Robin Williams as Sacks, and Robert De Niro as his patient.

Both book and film issue from what has been called ‘the most intense medical and human involvement’ that many film viewers have ever experienced. Attentive viewers live briefly with patients who had been transfixed, motionless, trancelike, for decades” by the 1920s sleeping sickness epidemic. The author describes his work in the late 1960s to help these patients at Beth Abraham Hospital in New York. The book (464 pages) is available on Kindle.

The movie is at 1:15 p.m. in the Upstairs Media Room. Contact Cam Esser 3813-0991.
