Bullfighting

Famed rejondeador Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza continues his winter tour through Mexico with a return to the metro area on Thursday, March 19, to top the bill at a nocturnal bullfight at the Plaza de Toros El Centenario in the center of Tlaquepaque.

The Spaniard is considered the world’s greatest exponent of rejon, fighting bulls on horseback, which is actually older than the traditional variety. It involves a spectacular show of horsemanship, as well as a breathtaking dance of man, horse and bull.  High-bred and valuable horses are trained for and specialize in various parts of the bullfighting act, with the horseman using up to five different horses against one bull.

Hermoso de Mendoza is joined by rejoneadora Monica Serrano and Tapatio novillero Carlos Casanueva.

Also on the bill are the popular Forcados Mazatlecos, a team of eight daredevils, who take on bulls face to face, without capes, to provide thrills such as the pega de cara or “face catch” – catching the bull by the horns and the tail.

The event starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are from 350 to 1,150 pesos.

Expo Antad

Next week Expo Guadalajara hosts one of its biggest trade shows of the year, as representatives of the commerce sector converge on Expo Antad, from Wednesday, March 18 through Friday, March 20.

Organized by Asociacion Nacional de Tiendas de Autoservicio y Departamentales (ANTAD), the show features 2,400 exhibitors and 42,000 visitors from 45 countries.  It is the biggest event in Latin America for retailers and suppliers to get together, not just to do business, but also exchange views to define the future of the commerce sector.

Expect the most well-known Mexican supermarkets, department stores, specialist stores and convenience stories to be present at the expo.

Around 660 new products will be presented at this year’s expo, which also includes a full program of conferences and workshops, largely for ANTAD members.

Anyone interested in attending should go to www.expoantad.net.

Musical car

Car manufacturer Nissan, the new sponsor of soccer’s UEFA Champions League, is showcasing an unusual musical installation constructed entirely out of car parts.

Named the “Nissan Champions League Orchestra,” the musical device was developed by a team of industrial designers and sound engineers. It plays the famous Champions League theme song, originally written by George Frideric Handel.

The machine is set to tour the country and will be in Guadalajara locations on the following dates:  Plaza Andares March 12-15, Plaza Galerias March 20-22, ITESO University March 23-25.
