Zoo happenings

The Guadalajara Zoo continues to spread seasonal joy with a variety of special holiday events, as well as its bizarre underwater Santa spectacle.

This weekend’s fun starts on Friday, December 26, with a choir singing selected carols at 11 a.m. in the zoo’s explanade. On Saturday. December 27 and Sunday, December 27, youngsters will be able to enjoy a show titled “Los Magicos Muñecos de la Navidad,”  beginning 3 p.m.

The Guadalajara Zoo is considered one of the best in Latin America, boasting plenty of space for the animals to roam.  Extras include a “Sky Ride,” a Safari Park, a train, aviary, aquarium, Australian area, petting zoo, theme park with rides and games, and more.  Be warned: the zoo is large – take sturdy walking shoes!

The Guadalajara Zoo is located at Paeso de Zoologico 600, Huentitan El Alto (a block north of the city’s northern Periferico on the Calzada Independencia). Throughout the holiday the zoo will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Telephone (33) 3674-4488 and 3674-4360; website: www.zooguadalajara.com.mx.

Salas Junior

It sounds like the stuff of nightmares for regular adult moviegoers but the new theater in the Cineopolis complex at Guadalajara’s Plaza Galerias will no doubt be welcomed by the parents and grandparents of small children.

The first Sala Junior is custom designed for kids aged between one and ten years and will only screen age-appropriate films.  Adults can only enter accompanied by one child or more.  Running down one side of the space is a toboggan, and other games have been installed to entertain youngsters.

The sala offers a variety of seating options, including “puff cushions” and comfy recliners.

There will be several intermissions during movie screenings to allow children to use bathrooms and let off steam.  Patrons should be aware that running around and noise are part of this “film-going experience.”

Digital mapping

Prior to Christmas Day, revelers enjoying Winter Wonderland activities in the Plaza Liberacion were treated to a festive ‘digital mapping’ show on the exterior of the Degollado Theater.

Rauch exhibit

A reminder that artworks by the late Georg Rauch, an Austrian-born resident of Jocotepec for many years, can be seen at the Museo del Palacio de Gobierno through the end of February.

The Palacio faces the Plaza de Armas and its landmark bandstand in the city center.
