Photographic rally

Gentlemen, fire up your cameras! Rodnik (Russian Vodka) Fotocross-Mexico and Cultura Guadalajara invite all photographers aged 14 years and older, amateurs or professionals, to participate in the first Fotocross competition in the city to be held on Paseo Chapultepec Saturday, September 27, 2 p.m.

Participants must form a team of of four to six photographers and friends. Any type of cameras are valid, including smart phones with good resolution. The teams must preregister by sending the name of their team and the names of the team members to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . Registration on the day of the event is between 2 and 4 p.m. The fee payable at the time of the event is 300 pesos per team.

The team is given T-shirts, notebooks, pens, maps and a sealed envelope with the tasks they must complete (there are 10 themes). From 4 to 6 p.m. there will be entertainment, including theater and a jazz band, presentation of the project and fun competitions. At 6 p.m. the teams will open their envelopes and scamper off to complete their photographic tasks and return at 8 p.m. to turn in their camera memory or film rolls. Winners will be announced at a reunion a week later, where three prizes will be awarded and the works hung for viewing. A video of teams going about their tasks during the competitions will also be shown.

October in Zapopan

Zapopan is screening this year’s 42 Multifest winning short films culled from 675 entries. The showings run from October 1-4, 7 p.m. at Video Sala del Instituto de Cultura, Vicente Guerrero 233 in Zapopan Centro. Entrance is free.

Thursdays during October, an exhibition and free classes in salsa dancing will be offered in Plaza Americas at 6 p.m., while on Sundays, danzon classes with Benjamin Bautista begin at same time. Thursday, October 30, a gala of “Symphonic Dance” will be offered at the plaza beginning at 8:30 p.m.

Also on Sundays, Banda Sinfonica de Zapopan give concerts at the kiosk in the Glorieta Chapalita, 5 p.m.

Chamber music

Guadalajara presents the Fifth Young Chamber Music Cycle from September 19 through October 3.

Five groups from Jalisco, Veracruz and Mexico City will perform, giving a platform for young musicians and emerging composers. The two-week program includes concerts, workshops, conferences, film projections, special tutorials and didactic presentations.

Three Jalisco chamber groups – Project Caos, Cuarteto Nima, the guitar Cuartet Equus – and the Cuarteto Tamayo from Veracruz  will interpret contemporary music and also focus on Mexican composers. The Raga Ensamble de Percusion from Mexico City will present a multimedia and musical spectacle. The closing concert will present the premiers of works by young Mexican composers chosen by way of a national competition.

Thursday, October 2: Raga Ensamble at  La Casa Suspendida, 8:30 p.m. 80 pesos.

Friday, October 3: Closing Concert at UdeG Paraninfo, 8:30 p.m. Free.

Opera screenings

Three film screenings of famous operas will be open to the public at the Casa ITESO Clavigero on the last Wednesdays of September, October and November, starting at 6 p.m. Free entry. The films are “La Traviata” on September 24, “Le Comte Ory” on October 29 and “Pagliacci” on November 26.
