Producer’s Fair

Hundreds of visitors turned up to browse and buy from dozens of vendors who set up shop at the Feria de Productores (Producer’s Fair) held last Sunday at the Lions Club (Club de Leones) on Avenida Tepeyac.

The event was organized by Círculo de Producción, a collective of small, local producers of organic, natural and eco-friendly products, who sell directly to the public at tianguis, farmer’s markets or through small independent health stores.

An antidote to industrial food production, the collective tries to build connections between producers and consumers through educational programs, including workshops and visits to the countryside. To learn more about the group visit www.circulodeproduccion.org. or visit them on Facebook.

The fair was deemed so successful that another edition will no doubt shortly be in the offing.

Butterfly trail

A Canadian photographic exhibit, “On the Trail of the Monarch Butterfly,” will be on display at the Andares Mall in Zapopan until Sunday, September 21.

Stunning microphotographic images and aerial photographs depict the Monarch’s amazing journey from Montreal to the mountains of central Mexico.

Mexican filmmaker and pilot Francisco “Vico” Gutiérrez followed the butterfly migration in his ultralight, decorated with the motif of the monarch butterfly and aptly named Papalotzin (the Aztec word for “small butterfly”). In total, he covered more than 6,000 kilometers in 90 hours of flight over 72 days.

The traveling exhibit is produced by the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in collaboration with the Canadian embassy in Mexico.

American School

Funds raised from the recent Green Race held at the American School were used last week in a reforestation outing to the Primavera Forest on Guadalajara’s western outskirts.

Some 100 students in their second year of the school’s junior high (secundaria) program headed out to the forest to plant 1,000 pine trees as part of the Reforestamos Mexico program.  Their efforts were supported by school staff and employees from the U.S. Consulate, a major backer of the program.

The students planted trees in a part of the forest that had previously been affected by fire.

The U.S. Consulate General organized May’s Green Race, which attracted 1,500 competitors.
