Expat Living

Dinner at six in Grandma Gail’s kitchen

An expat “foodie” who loves to cook is now offering a variety of “north of the border” dishes, either served family style on select Saturday evenings each month, or packaged “to go” in individual to family sized portions.  Living in a foreign culture and experiencing the culinary diversity is wonderful.  But, when you just yearn for a taste of home, and don’t want to cook, Grandma Gail will be in her kitchen whipping up something that will hit the spot.

Dinner @6 is served on select Saturday evenings with a menu consisting of soup or salad, an entrée, sides and dessert. All the items are made from scratch with quality ingredients. The entrée will be one of a wide array of dishes that you might remember from a time when you lived north of the border.  A vegetarian alternative will be available.

Gail Early is a member of the Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic and has taken first and third place in two of the three competitions she has entered this year. She also organized the start of a new group for “foodies” who love to cook in the Guadalajara area: Tastes of Amsoc (named after the American Society where the group meets), which continues to grow each month. While CASA has a “gourmet” tone, with the participant’s dishes being judged, TOA is much more casual, with members just enjoying great food and each other’s company.

Early has lived in Guadalajara for the last two and a half years; retiring from a large U.S. corporation and moving here to be close to her four-year-old twin granddaughters. She also left her part-time business cooking packaged meals for fellow employees who were too busy with a career and family activities to spend time in the kitchen.  She previously owned a part-time business related to wedding receptions and wrote Frugally Fabulous Wedding Receptions, available on Amazon.

Serving dinners of Chicken and Dumplings and Southern Fried Chicken with Potato Salad has already resulted in a few loyal followers who have made standing reservations for the dining room. The price of the meal is determined by the entrée and sides, averaging less than 125 pesos. The price includes unlimited iced tea or coffee. Soda, beer and wine are also available.

Grandma Gail’s Kitchen is located near the Ciudadela Shopping Center in Zapopan, 1½ blocks off Avenida Patria, on bus lines 51B and 632. By reservation only, seating is limited.
