Bravo Theatre
“Sylvia,” a comedy by A.R. Gurney, plays this weekend at Bravo Theatre and runs until November 13.
Directed by Roseann Wilshere, the play stars Paul Kloegman, Kathleen Carlson, Jayme Littlejohn, Tony Wilshere, Kathleen Morris and Arlene Pace.
“Sylvia” revolves around a stray dog picked up by a man in mid-life crisis and the effect of his new “relationship” on his marriage.
The show runs Thursday to Sunday through November 13. Times: Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday and Sunday matinees at 4 p.m.
During the run of the show the theater will post pictures of dogs brought by its audience members on their lobby bulletin board. The cast and crew will vote for the best five photos on the last day of the run and the winners will be contacted by phone and email. If you bring the photo with you and write your name, email and phone number on the back, Bravo will donate ten percent of the 200-peso ticket price to local dog charities.

Art openings
Luise Neal-Pedroza opens her show “Mexico Blooms,” with works focusing on scenes of people, and places of Mexico and portraits of Frida Kahlo, Friday, November 4, 5-8 p.m. at La Mision restaurant in West Ajijic.
Neal-Pedroza is a folk artist and photographer who paints on tin using gouache and also on canvas. She grew up in the Mexican-American community of Decoto, California and married into a family from southern Mexico.
She is inspired to paint scenes of Mexican life, men and woman and children in profile using the classical bright and rich colors of this country.
Galeria de Arte Axixic exhibits paintings, etchings, sculptures and retablos at a collective showing opening Saturday, November 5, 3-7 p.m. See works by Judy Dykstra-Brown, Jesus Lopez Vega, Antonio Lope Vega, Tomas Benton, De Paul Durham, Isidro Xilonsochitl, Jesus Lopez Garcia, Xill Fessenden, Pat Apt, Luis Valvi, Gabriel Mariscal and Betty Petersen. Music, botanas and cocktails will enliven the show at Rio Zula 1, corner of Ocampo in West Ajijic.
Casa Luna, is also holding a collective opening Saturday, November 5, 6 p.m. Nine artists are participating: Raúl Bañuelos will recite a poem “Una Vida,” (a translation of a poem in English by Reginald Gibbons); Edna Cantoral Acosta presents drawings, serigraphy and the project “Libro Objeto: Ediciones Axolotl”; Akhila Krishnan shows a video; Guillermo Uralde presents a collage and Ioulia Akhmadeeva a book. Also, Rumi Tsuda shows ceramics, Japanese booklets; Daniel Georges photographs; Derli Romero graphics on paper inside a bottle and Claudia Ramírez Martínez mixed media creations.

LLT Playhouse Series
As part of its ongoing Playhouse Series, Lakeside Little Theatre presents “The Audience,” starring Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II, from the National Theatre in London. Written by Peter Morgan and directed by Stephen Daldry, “The Audience” will be shown Saturday, November 5, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 6, 3 p.m. Tickets, 200 pesos, are on sale at the LLT box office Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. to noon. JPO bus trips
Viva la Musica! is sponsoring bus trips from Lakeside to the Degollado Theater in Guadalajara to hear concerts by the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra and see the Jalisco Ballet. The buses leave from just east of Farmacia Guadalajara in Ajijic on the Carretera.
Sunday, November 6: Beethoven’s Leonora Overture, and Ninth Symphony. Bus departs 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 25: Live opera “Othello” with the Zapopan Choir. Pianist Galen performs two private 90-minute concerts Monday, November 7 and Tuesday. November 8. Along with four other top lakeside musicians, Galen will take the audience on a musical journey including old musicals, pop and romantic ballads, all in unique arrangements. Actor’s scene study
Moderator and facilitator Roseann Wilshere offers six-week workshops in scene study at Bravo Theatre on Monday afternoons, 3-5:30 p.m., beginning November 7. Her technique is based on the book “Audition” by Michael Shurtleff, whose works are based on the methods developed by Russian master Stanislavski.
Actors may be at any level from beginner to experienced. Although critique is guided by Wilshere, all the participants are asked to analyze each other’s scenes constructively as an important component of the workshop.

Lakeside Little Theatre opens auditions for the cast of “Death and the Maiden” by Ariel Dorfman, to be directed by L.B. Hamilton, November 11-12. Hamilton is looking for two men and one woman to play Paulina (late 30’s – 40’s, physically strong), Gerardo (40’s – early 50’s) and Roberto (50s – 60’s).
“Death and the Maiden” is a psychological thriller: Ariel Dorfman’s explosively provocative, award-winning play is set in a post-revolution South American country that has only recently returned to democracy. Griselda Piña at the Auditorio
Blue Velvet Funky Band, originally from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, but settled in Chapala for the last six years, gives a concert for jazz lovers featuring award-winning singer Griselda Piña, at the Auditorio de la Ribera, Thursday, November 10, 7 p.m. The sextet plays jazz classics, 70s instrumental funk and Afrobeat, with emphasis on improvisation. Piña wowed audiences with her tribute to Janice Joplin two months ago in Guadalajara.
