Ribera Arts Review - October 15, 2016

Art on the Plaza

The Ajijic Society of the Arts presents its first great show of the season Sunday, October 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Ajijic Plaza in front of the Centro Cultural Ajijic. 

Impersonators

The next two Starlight Concerts at La Mision feature a La Cage aux Follies performers from Guadalajara impersonating Marilyn Monroe, Cher, Barbra Streisand, Madonna and others. 

Two shows are scheduled Wednesday, October 19 and Wednesday, October 26, 6 p.m. 

The event includes a welcome cocktail, appetizers, a choice of two entrees and desserts. Ticket price, including tip, is 600 pesos.

Fun with Music

Belva Velazquez invites everyone to join in song at the next Fun with Music sing-along, Wednesday, October 19 at Abbeyfield retirement home (in front of the skate park in Ajijic), 4:30 p.m.

Free piano recitals

The Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo offers a series of piano recitals by musicians from the University of Guadalajara, beginning October 20, 7 p.m., and continuing every Thursday, through the first week of December. The first recital is by Mario Alejandro Hernandez. Admission is free.

Watercolor Demo

Lake Chapala Painting Guild President Lois Schroff will demonstrate how she paints scenes in watercolor, Thursday, and Friday, October 20 and 21, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Galeria Sol Mexicano. 

This is the first in a series of monthly demonstrations by Guild members. Geraldine Classen will present on November 3 and 4 and Winnie Hunt on November 17 and 18. Showstoppers

Los Cantantes del Lago presents Showstoppers 13 Sunday, October 23, 4 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church. Treats this year include a quartet from Guadalajara, the fabulous Barbara Pruitt as emcee and the ever inimitable Timothy G. Ruff Welch as accompanist (and sidekick). LLT

Lakeside Little Theatre presents “Outside Mullingar,” an Irish love story by John Patrick Shanley and directed by Ann Swiston. Heartbreaking, funny and ultimately deeply moving, “Outside Mullingar” is a compassionate, delightful work about how it is never too late to take a chance on love. 

The play runs from October 21 to October 30. Art auction

Galeria Casa Luna is promoting lakeside artists and a few contemporary Guadalajara artists via a collective art auction Saturday, October 22. The reception begins 4 p.m. with music and a cocktail. Address: Ocampo 22, Ajijic.

Political satire

Just back from over the pond and a sold-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the politically charged a cappella Kinsey Sicks quartet present “Electile Dysfunction” at the Auditorio de la Ribera Monday, October 24, 6 p.m.

With the race heating up for the U.S. presidency, “Electile Dysfunction” is a timely satire of American politics – a winning combination of tight harmonies and intelligent fun entertainment.

Guitar concert

Chilean guitarist Wladimier Carrasco gives a free concert at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala as part of the Universidad de Guadalajara’s International Guitar Festival, Wednesday, October 26, 7 p.m.

Naked Stage

“Time Stands Still” by Donald Margulies is the next production of the Naked Stage Reader’s Theatre. 

The play is set in Brooklyn and revolves around Sarah, a photo journalist who has returned from covering the Iraq war after being injured by a roadside bomb, and her reporter boyfriend James who is swamped by guilt after leaving Sarah alone in Iraq. They receive a visit from their friend Richard, a photo editor, who introduces them to his new girlfriend Mandy, who is much younger than he. The play focuses on their relationships and Sarah and James’ prospects at a more conventional life. 

The play is directed by L.B. Hamilton and stars Carolyn Cothran, David Goldman, Kevin Leitch and Amanda Miller. Show dates are Friday, October 28; Saturday, October 29 and Sunday, October 30. 

The Naked Stage Theatre is located at Hidalgo 261 in Riberas del Pilar. Ballet

The Ballet de Jalisco, directed by Dariusz Blajer, presents a gala consisting of parts of several classic works at the Auditorio de la Ribera Saturday, October 29, 6 p.m. 

The troupe will interpret at least one contemporary dance piece choreographed by Blajer.

Elegant soloist Marissa Jiménez and six other top soloists from the group will present pas de deux from classical standards such as Romeo and Juliet, Don Quixote, Carmen and Flames of Paris. A contemporary dance based on the biblical story of Cain and Abel and choreographed by Blajer will also be performed. 

Tickets for the Ajijic event, which is sponsored by Viva la Musica, are on sale at the Lake Chapala Society (Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to noon), the Auditorio de la Ribera, Diane Pearl and Mia’s Boutique. 

Bravo Theatre

“Sylvia” by A.R. Gurney is set to play at Bravo Theatre November 3-13. Directed by Roseann Wilshere, the play stars Paul Kloegman, Kathleen Carlson, Jayme Littlejohn, Tony Wilshere, Kathleen Morris and Arlene Pace. 

This funny play revolves around a stray dog picked up by a man in mid-life crisis and the effect of his new “relationship” on his marriage. The show opens Thursday, November 3 and will run Thursday to Sunday through November 13. Times: Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday and Sunday matinees at 4 p.m.

Art Masters Fair

More than 85 artists will present their crafts at the 15th Annual Feria Maestros del Arte (Art Masters Fair) Friday, November 11 to Sunday, November 13, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the open-air environment of the Chapala Yacht Club.  

Come meet the artisans in person and help preserve and promote Mexican folk art traditions. The feria is a colorful Mexican fiesta like atmosphere with entertainment and food. Admission is 50 pesos.

Free courses

The Centro Cultural Ajijic is offering free classes (in Spanish) in children’s choir, regional Mexican dances, theater, drawing and painting. The courses are all twice weekly in the afternoons and evenings. For more information, stop into the center located on the Ajijic Plaza, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. or call 766-2373.

Public children’s art

Grupo Axixic Michicihualli is holding a competition from October through December for local children to create art that will appear on public street posts. Entry to the contest is free and painting materials will be provided. The winning prizes consist of trips to the Guadalajara Zoo, a Guadalajara museum visit, a trip to Mazamitla or to the Guachimontones ruins site. Three area schools are confirmed as participant.

Singing contest

La Bodega Ajijic restaurant continues with its International Singing Contest 2016 to benefit local charities. 

The last chance to entr a qualifying round is Thursday, October 20, 6:30 p.m. The grand finale is on October 27. Each night benefits a different charity. Six judges grade participants on voice quality, presentation and diction using a ten-point scale. For more information, call 766-1002.

JPO bus trips

Viva la Musica! is sponsoring bus trips from Lakeside to the Degollado Theater in Guadalajara to hear concerts by the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra and see the Jalisco Ballet. The buses leave from just east of Farmacia Guadalajara in Ajijic on the Carretera.

Sunday, November 6: Beethoven’s Leonora Overture, and Ninth Symphony. Bus departs 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 25: Live opera “Othello” with the Jalisco State Choir. Bus departs 4:30 p.m., with stop at a fine restaurant. Sunday, December 18: The Jalisco Ballet performs Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite (500 and 600 pesos). Bus departs at 10.30 a.m.

More Viva

The Arias Trio from Bamberg, Germany will give a special concert in a private home in Rancho del Oro Wednesday, November 16. A champagne reception is at 4 p.m., and the concert at 5 p.m.
