LLT season
“Painting Churches” continues its run at the Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) Friday, September 23 through Sunday, October 2.
Written by Tina Howe, the play is set in a luxury Boston apartment, where an aging professor emeritus and poet laureate, along with his wacky wife, await the arrival of their portrait artist daughter who wishes to paint them before they have to move to smaller quarters.
L.B. Hamilton, David Wharff and Tina Leonard are directed by Peggy Lord Chilton; stage manager Beth Leitch and assistant stage manager Debra Bowers keep it tight.

Art exhibits
A reception for “Arte de Tomas” will be held Friday, September 23, 3-6 p.m. at La Bella Vida, Constitucion 6, Ajijic.
Fusion Art Gallery in Centro Laguna presents artists Rey Trigueros and Kiki Kaye at an opening Saturday, September 24, 5-8 p.m. Drinks and appetizers will be served.
Trafic Arte is an exhibition of digitally manipulated photos and calligraphy opening Saturday, October 24, 4-10 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Ajijic.
La Peña de Santos Rico Centro Cultural (Constitucion 16, Ajijic) presents a variety of artistic talent Saturday, October 1, including a collection of new handcrafted jewelry by Alejandro Garza and Alejandra Morales, the exhibit “Artistic Trajectory” by Dionicio Morales, and a photography and art exhibit by Citlalli Morales, Farid Bak and friends. Live music is on the docket.
Beloved Mexican tunes
“Mexico Lindo y Querido,” an evening of music showcasing the country’s best known composers, is scheduled for Tuesday, September 27, 7 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia, Chapala’s former town hall. The admission price is 100 pesos.
Singing contest
La Bodega Ajijic restaurant holds is annual International Singing Contest 2016 to benefit local charities.
Qualifying rounds are held each Thursday, 6:30 p.m. beginning September 29 and running through October 20. The grand finale is held October 27.
Each night benefits a different charity: local firefighters, the School for Special Children, La Ola Orphanage, Toquen San Juan Cosala and San Andres Church. Six judges will grade participants on voice quality, presentation and diction using a 10-point scale. The three highest scoring competitors from each round will be entered into the grand finale.
The audience can also vote — at a peso per vote, as many times as they like. The winner of the popular vote will have five points added to their score. The total raised by the public vote and ten-percent of total sales of that evening will go to the benefiting charity of the day. Singers compete for one grand prize: 2,000 pesos and gifts from the sponsors.

Velazquez exhibit
Belva and Enrique Velazquez hold their 24th annual Our Belived Mexico Calendar launch party Friday, September 30, 6 to 8 p.m. and and Saturday, October 1, noon to 8 p.m. at their Gallery located at 16 de Septiembre 7 in Ajijic. The original art for the 2017 calendar will be hung and you can have your copy of the calendar signed by the artists and vote on your favorite painting. Refreshments will be served.
Beatles tribute
Ticket to Ride – a tribute to the Beatles’ early works (1962-1966) by Lara Gallardo, Joel Barker, Olivia Smith and Giberto Rios – is up on Friday, September 30, 7:30 p.m. at Bistro Ocampo 71. Call 331-097-9154 for more information.

The Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) kicks off “RED!,” its annual themed show Saturday, October 1, 5-7 p.m. at Casa Luna and ArtRageous (Ocampo 22, Ajijic). The show will be on display October 2-15, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Participating artists include:
Naked Stage
“Tuesdays with Morrie” by Jeffrey Hatcher and Mitch Albom will be offered Friday, September 30 and Saturday and Sunday, October 1 and 2 at the Naked Stage Readers Theatre in Riberas del Pilar.
“Tuesdays with Morrie” is the autobiographical story of Mitch Albom, an accomplished journalist driven solely by his career, and Morrie Schwartz, his former college professor.
The play is directed by Graham Miller and features Paul Kloegman and Damyn Young.
Singers wanted
Los Cantantes del Lago is looking for more male singers and sopranos for this season.
Maestro Timothy Welch is planning to present John Rutter’s “Gloria” with brass, percussion, organ and piano – and a full choir is needed.

Showcase at Bravo
The Actor’s Studio presents a showcase of scenes from famous plays by Neil Simon, Noel Coward, Norm Foster, Joe Pintauro, Clare Boothe Luce and John Patrick Shanley at Bravo Theatre (Rio Bravo 10, Ajijic). Political satire
Just back from over the pond and a sold-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe festival, The Kinsey Sicks present their timely show “Electile Dysfunction” at the Auditorio de la Ribera Monday, October 24, 6 p.m.
An a cappella quartet who bill themselves as “America’s Favorite Dragapella Beauty shop Quartet,” the Kinsey Sicks perform both original music and lyrics as well as parodies of well-known songs. Their shows are both comedic and highly politically charged.
With the race heating up for the U.S. presidency, “Electile Dysfunction” is a timely satire of American politics – a winning combination of tight harmonies and intelligent fun entertainment.
