Activities kick off with a parade along Avenida Madero, starting from the north end outside the municipal gymnasium, at 9 a.m. Groups will then settle in at the open-air forum on the east leg of the waterfront Malecón to take turns demonstrating performance movements and techniques.

Renaissance music

A concert of Renaissance and early Baroque music by the Ensemble Galatea is offered Sunday, September 11, 4 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo (Old Train Station) in Chapala.
Galatea Ensemble is a group of three talented young specialists in early music, who have played together for four years. Their repertoire ranges from the time of the Catholic Kings until the period of the early Baroque, playing on replicas of historical instruments such the lute, vihuela and viola da gamba.

The program is comprised of arias and instrumental pieces from Italy, Spain and England and includes the most popular musical forms of the Renaissance. Tickets are 100 pesos at the door.

Two concerts

The Northern Lights Festival is presenting two concerts featuring two wonderful musicians over the next two weekends.

Pianist David Fung – a top prize winner in both the Arthur Rubinstein and Queen Elizabeth international competitions –returns to Lakeside to wow audiences at Casa Bragg (Las Brisas 7, Ajijic) on Sunday, September 11, 2 p.m. Fung has been praised by no less than the New York Times as “stylish and articulate.”

Countertenor Daniel Moody will make his Ajijic debut singing romantic songs from the baroque era, accompanied by David Fung on the harpsichord, at Casa Bravo (Nicolas Bravo 35, Ajijic) on Sunday, September 18, 2 p.m.  The Washington Post lauded Moody for his “sweet and melancholy sound,” while the New York Times described his voice as “vivid and powerful.”

Wine and cheese will be served a half hour before the concerts. Tickets are 400 pesos. Seating is limited, so reserve your tickets now by contacting Maureen at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call (376) 108-1407.

Photographers unite!

Paco Padilla concert

Ajijic will cap off this year’s Fiestas Patrias program with a free concert by singer-songwriter Paco Padilla set for Saturday, September 17, 8 p.m. at the town plaza.

A native son of Tlaquepaque, Padilla is a consummate showman, renowned for his engaging style and repertoire of original folk songs revolving around themes of Mexican customs, everyday life and love of homeland. His quirky lyrics are tinged with humor and colloquial language.

In “A la Cola,” he reflects on the experience of standing in line to buy tortillas. Other songs tell stories about ordinary people: a Guadalajara carriage driver, a bicycling bread vendor, a little girl who sells chewing gum at a traffic light. “Puro Corazón” is a tribute to Jalisco places and traditions.

For his Ajijic appearance, Padilla will be accompanied by Utopia, a contemporary sextet formed by young lakeside musicians.

Instrumentals

Cuarteto Libre (violoncello, clarinet, violin, flute) plays music from Mexican film scores, including the Beatles, Scott Joplin, Nino Rota and more, Thursday, September 22, 7 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo. Entrance is free.
