Ribera Arts Review - August 6, 2016

Art Camp wrap-up

The Lake Chapala Society’s fourth annual Summer Art Camp concluded activities Saturday, July 30 with a graduation event. Ajijic Delegado Chuni Medeles and Centro Cultural Ajijic acting director Beto Muñoz were on hand to assist camp organizers in handing out diplomas to each of the 125 children who enrolled in the program.

The youngsters also received their share of proceeds from the sale of items they made in the acrylics, watercolor, drawing, collage, fabric art, jewelry making and papier maché workshops.

The art sale held on the previous Saturday netted almost 16,000 pesos. About half of each price tag put aside to fund the LCS Children’s Art program, with the rest split up among the young artists who sold their pieces.

Impressed by the success of the art camp, Chapala Mayor Javier Degollado recently sent San Antonio town administrator Miguel Angel Espinosa, municipal development officer Francisco Beltrán and expat liaison Gloria Perales on an exploratory visit to explore possibilities of duplicating the workshop program next summer in San Antonio.

Art auction

Efren Gonzalez will wield the gavel at an art auction Friday, August 12, 4 p.m. at the Ajijic Plaza to help fund his skull mural project.

The auction offers collectors an excellent opportunity to pick up deals on works by local artists. Buyers can enjoy drinks and snacks while bidding on the selection of oils, watercolors, pastels, drawings, sculptures and more.

A 30-percent cut of the sales will go toward financing the production and installation of dozens of skull memorials that Gonzalez is making to compose his new Dead of the Dead ceramic mural.

LLT playhouse

The next screening from the London’s Royal Opera House at the Lakeside Little Theatre’s Playhouse Series is Saturday August 13, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, August 14, 3 p.m.

Both “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci” will be featured at each showing.

Betrayal, lust, love, jealousy and murder abound in The Royal Opera’s pairing of these heart-rending classics, which are both conducted by Antonio Pappano and directed by Damiano Michieletto. Eva-Maria Westbroek and Aleksandrs Antonenko lead the world-class cast.

Cavalleria Rusticana is a tragedy of ancient codes and the illicit love of the peasant Turiddu for the married Lola. In a small southern Italian village where woman are objectified and men fight for their pride, the lovers’ betrayal ends in the ultimate duel.

Pagliacci is the story of an acting troupe: the hunchback clown Tonio, the murderous Canio and his adulterous wife Nedda. Taking to the stage in the local community hall, their performance quickly unravels as the imaginary and reality merge together and Canio descends into a jealous rage murdering Nedda in front of the audience.

Tickets, 200 pesos, are available at the LLT box office Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to noon or one hour before curtain. Seats can be reserved at time of purchase.
