LLT playhouse
The Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) offers an HD screening presentation via its affiliation with London’s Royal Opera House and the National Theatre. On Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17, LLT Showcase presents the Royal Opera House’s HD screening of Gaetano Donizetti’s tragic masterpiece “Lucia di Lammermoor.”
Acclaimed director Katie Mitchell’s production of Donizetti’s tragedy relates the descent of Lucia, compelled by her brother to abandon her betrothed, and tricked into a loveless marriage, into grief, madness and murder.
The title role is sung by Diana Damrau, an expert in the coloratura repertory, while U.S. tenor Charles Castronovo plays her secret lover, the reckless and passionate Edgardo.
Show times are 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, and 3 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets, 200 pesos, are available at the LLT box office Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to noon or one hour before curtain. Little dancers
Youngsters enrolled in ballet classes at the Auditorio de la Ribera are ready to go on stage with two performances of La Princesita (The Little Princess) set for Friday, July 8, 6 p.m. and Saturday, July 9, noon. Admission is 45 peso at the door.
Sex Ed film
Local youth are invited to sign up for film-making workshops centered on the theme of prevention of teenage pregnancies. Sponsored by the Centro de Desarollo Jocotepec and the Chapala government, the program called Cámara…Opción will run on consecutive Saturdays from July 16 through September, with morning sessions held 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Casa Proméxico in San Juan Cosalá and afternoon sessions, 4 to 7 p.m., at Chapala City Hall.
Each group is open to 15 participants who will learn how to create their own videos on the topic of human sexuality. Enrollment is free of charge. Summer workshops
“Pure Tales” is the theme of a summer course theater workshop for children to be held at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala from July 18 to August 12. Children from eight to 12 years old can attend courses that include shadow theater, puppets and faces, on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. The workshops conclude with a presentation of their work. The cost is 350 pesos per course.
Also offered is a singing workshop for children and adolescents on Wednesdays, from 4 to 6 p.m. The cost is based on the amount of kids who sign up. For more information on either course, call 765-7424.
Modern arts festival
Sincrónico, a month-long celebration of contemporary arts organized by Chapala’s Culture Department is on the calendar for July 22 through August 20. The program includes a wide range of activities in disciplines of music, dance, theater, film, literature and visual arts with a special focus on seasoned and rising artists in the lakeside community.
Guest artists taking part in the festival include renowned Colombian painter Carlos Cepeda, distinguished Mexican guitarist Francisco Bribiesca and five choral groups from different parts of the country. Events are scheduled at different venues throughout the municipality, with most open to the public free of charge. Look for details in coming editions of the Guadalajara Reporter.
Summer Art Camp
The fourth Lake Chapala Society (LCS) Children’s Art Program (CAP) Summer Art Camp runs Monday, July 18 through Friday, July 22 from 10 a.m. to noon daily. A sale of the children’s artworks from the workshops will be held in the LCS Gazebo Saturday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Workshops are filling up, so if you know of any children who would like to participate, ask their parents to complete a form at the LCS office or to come to the Art Patio on Saturdays between 10 a.m. and noon.

Variety at Bravo!
“Extravaganza – a Variety Show” organized by Jaime Littlejohn will be on at the Bravo! Theatre Thursday, July 21 through Saturday, July 23. Entertainment of all types is on the bill: The Ukelele Club is doing sing-a-long numbers; Peggy Lord Chilton is strumming and singing her rendition of “Cinderella” — a comic masterpiece; Three tap dance numbers will be performed by both beginners and intermediate tap classes, plus one solo piece. Some of these people have taken up tap dance as older adults for the first time in their lives and some took tap decades ago and wanted to get back to it. There are two soloists - Amaranta Santos and Wanda White and a trio doing Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary”; Jacinta Stringer is performing a comedy piece: The Three Little Pigs Shakespearean style; Mariacelli Navarro Salerno on piccolo and Timothy G. Ruff Welch on piano will play three movements from Souvenirs by Robert Beaser: Happy Face, Spain and Cindy Redux; also a few comedy improvisations will be offered up.

Two guitar recitals
Alan Gomez will play a program of music from three centuries of composers including Augustin Barrios, Fernando Sor, Johann Sebastian Bach and Francisco Tarrega at a recital, Thursday, July 21, 7 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala. Entrance is 50 pesos.
At the same venue, Thursday, July 28, 7 p.m., Hugo Gracian will play works from Spinacino, Bach, Regondi, Francisco Gabilondo Soler (Cri-Cri), M. M. Ponce, and Krieger, Entrance is 100 pesos.
Ixtlahuacan globo fest
Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos invites the public to its first annual Festival de Globos de Cantoya (paper balloons) Friday, July 29 through Sunday, July 31, beginning midday at the town’s municipal field. Apart from the balloon spectacle, there will be music, dancing, food, arts and craft sales. The state of Michoacan is the guest of honor at the event. The venue is about a half-block off the highway on Calle Ramon Corona, 500 meters north of the main entrance to town on the mountain side.
LCS Music Fest
A rock retrospective is planned Saturday, July 30 at the Lake Chapala Society. The band that played at the Woodstock festival in 2014 is back by popular demand and also on stage will be the CUBCA Orchestra from the University of Guadalajara. The event is catered by Alex’s Pasta Bar and Number 4 Restaurant. Purchase tickets at LCS: 100 pesos for members, 150 pesos for non-members and 180 pesos at the door.
Opera Gala
Soprano Maria de Jesus Cardenas, mezzosoprano Teresa Banderas, tenor Jose Luis Villarruel and baritone Ricardo Lavin will present opera pieces from Mozart, Bizet, Bellini and Rossini in a benefit for the Train Garden at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala, Thursday, August 4, 7 p.m. Entrance is 200 pesos.
