ASA donation

Deena Hafker, president of the Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA), recently  pledged 21,000 pesos for art supplies and materials for the weekly Children’s Art Program and a five-day summer art camp at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS).

The presentation took place during the ASA meeting at Restaurant La Bodega on Monday, May 3.

ASA members raised the funds during the February 2015 Open Studios event co-coordinated by Barbara Passarello and Ken Caldwell. During a single weekend, area residents paid 50 pesos to visit 19 working art studios and to watch 49 artists at work.

The ASA founded the Children’s Art Program. A large group of their artists spend most Saturday mornings volunteering to help the 75 or more local youngsters who show up at LCS to draw and paint.

This weekly effort – and the summer camp scheduled July 20-25 – is under the direction of LCS coordinator Danielle Page.

Children will attend daily ASA art camp sessions from 10 a.m. to noon from Monday through Friday, followed by a sale of the works they have created on Saturday, July 26, open to the public.

ASA volunteers teach their chosen media during the daily sessions, allowing the children to dabble in jewelry, paper mache, watercolor and various other techniques. Although there is no charge to attend the camp, children must register in advance. More information is available from Page at This email address is being protected from spambots.
