Cancellation

Viva la Musica has announced the cancellation of its November 20 String Quartet concert due to a conflicting charity concert in Chapala. According to a Viva news release, the performers are unable to play during the following week.   Anyone who has purchased tickets for this concert may obtain a refund at the Lake Chapala Society ticket booth on Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to noon.

Master Lecture

A reminder that the Art Xik Xik Master Lecture Series on Saturday November 8, 5 p.m. will feature popular lakeside muralist Javier Zaragoza. The lecture takes place at the Quetzal Restaurant in Chapala (Hidalgo 236).

Zaragoza will explain, in English, “the Ribera of Lake Chapala,” the significant mural depicting the history of Chapala that was unveiled in 2009 at the east edge of the town. He will also display some of his paintings and new works at the reception.

Tickets are available at the restaurant and at Diane Pearl Colecciones in Ajijic.

Operas

Space is still available on the Viva bus trips to Guadalajara for two operas being staged at the Teatro Degollado on Sunday, November 16 and Sunday, November 30.

The first is a production of Georges Bizet’s “Carmen,” with María Lo Mónaco in the role of Carmen and Giancarlo Monsalve as Don José. The opera on November 30 is Donizetti’s “L’Eliser D’Amore,” a cheerful romantic comedy involving love and deception, with Dante Alcalá in the role of Nemorino and Anabel de la Mora as Adina.

The buses depart at 4.30 p.m. just east of Farmacia Guadalajara in Ajijic. Tickets are 750 pesos for Viva members, 850 for non-members, obtainable at the LCS on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon, or by arrangement with Marshall Krantz, 766-2834, or Ingrid Goodridge at 331-443-6837 (cel).

‘Live at the Met’

Viva also operates bus trips to Guadalajara for the “Live at the Met” HD simulcasts at the Teatro Diana.

Next up is “The Barber of Seville” by Rossini on Saturday, November 22. The bus leaves 10.30 a.m. The live broadcast on Saturday, December 13 is “Die Meistersinger” by Wagner. The bus leaves at 9.30 a.m.

‘Live at the Met’ bus/show tickets are 300 pesos for Viva members or 400 for non-members, available at the above mentioned location and phone numbers.

Daniel Cordero

Local guitarist Daniel Cordero is scheduled to play a selection of classic rock, folk music and romantic selections at Restaurant Los Telares in Ajijic, on Friday, November 7, beginning at 6 p.m.

Blue Velvet Jazz

The Lago Café, at the corner of Juarez and the Carretera in Ajijic, is hosting the Blue Velvet Jazz Trio on Saturday, November 8, 7:30 p.m. The group will play their usual popular mix of old-school standards, funk and retro styles of jazz. There is no cover charge.

Jazz in Jocotepec

Pie Grande, a young jazz group from Aguascalientes, will appear in the Jocotepec plaza on Sunday, November 9, 8 p.m. as part of their 2014 Artistic Circuit. The Jocotepec stopover will be the fourth concert of the 27 the quintet will play in nine central and western Mexican states between November 6 and December 5.

Renaissance, Baroque

Lakeside resident and classical guitarist Jim Byers will accompany soprano Katia Sanchez in a concert on Sunday, November 9, 4 p.m. in Chapala’s Centro Cultural Conzalez Gallo (the old train station). The duo has prepared a selection of music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, including music by John Dowland, Girolamo Frescobaldi and Handel.

The 100-peso tickets for the performance are available at Diane Pearl Colecciones or at the door.
Film Debut.

“In the Shadow of Mount Garcia,” the new film produced by 50-year veteran documentary filmmaker Roy Nolan, features the activities and villages on the south shore of Lake Chapala. Nolan is a long-term south shore expat resident. His partner Margarita Fettweis narrated the documentary that will be presented on Tuesday, November 11, 4 and 7 p.m., in Cinemas del Lago in Plaza Bugambilias.

Proceeds from these showings will be donated to the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) Children’s Art Program. Tickets are available at the theater box office and at Diane Pearl Colecciones.

Bamberg String Quartet

The Chapala Sunrise Rotary Club will present Germany’s world-renowned Bamberg Quartet in concert on Thursday, November 13, 3 p.m. in Chapala’s historic Centro Cultural Conzalez Gallo (the old railway station).

Members of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra formed the quartet in 1975. The current group will perform Haydn’s “Quartet in E major, Op. 20,” Mozart’s “Quartet in E minor KV421” and Beethoven’s “Quartet in G Major Op 18.” The group has performed in Europe, Asia and North and South America. Tickets are 200 pesos at the door, at Diane Pearl Colecciones or at Charter Club Tours in Ajijic.

Guitar and Bass

Guitarist Daniel Cordero and Sergio Casas on bass will take the stage at Adelitas Restaurant in San Antonio Tlayacapan, presenting an eclectic selection of music on Saturday, November 15, 7:30 p.m.
