It’s fiesta time in Ixtlahuacán

Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos is one of the numerous Mexican towns that embrace Santo Santiago (St. James the Greater) as patron saint.

Wrapped into the lively festivities underway July 16 through 25 are the colorful religious processions taking place every evening around 6 p.m., nighttime entertainment and fireworks at the central plaza and round-the-clock street fair booths stocked with food, drink, crafts and miscellanea.

The celebration opens Saturday with the traditional procession of pilgrims traveling on foot and horseback departing from Buena Vista to follow the Guadalajara-Chapala into the center of town to the parish church opposite the plaza.

Special activities will extend through the end of the month with the Feria del Membrillo set for July 29 to August 3, showcasing products made with the quince, the town’s namesake fruit, and culinary specialties from other municipalities. Entertainment events include the three-day Globos de Cantoya paper balloon festival, auto and motorcycle shows, and exhibitions of dancing horses.
