Local artists decorate public spaces

Two well-known lakeside artists have left their studios to work on new murals in municipal buildings.

Chapala’s Miguel Mora, a master of classical styles, has been commissioned to adorn the interior of the old city hall building, currently under renovation to become a centrally located cultural center.

Appropriately, he is decorating the entry way to the 214-seat performing arts auditorium with images of the nine muses. Euterpe, personification of music and song, is portrayed in a single section appearing next to the main gate.  Thalia (comedy) and Melpomene (tragedy) are depicted in individual portraits painted on the south wall.  Shown in the accompanying photo at work, the artist sketches outlines of the figures Calliope (epic poetry), Polyhymnia (sacred poetry), Terpsichore (dance), Erato (love poetry), Clio (history) and Urania (astronomy), clustered together on a large adjacent panel.

Ajijic painter Jesus Lopez Vega has been assigned to adorn the walls of the roofed patio at the Family Development Agency (DIF) headquarters located at Calle Degollado 327. Following his typical style of integrating native Indian motifs, his mural is divided into five arched sections representing the agency’s core activities, family values and the community’s roots. The right-hand panel features the DIF insignia painted above Chapala’s coat-of-arms, both derived from a Nahuatl glyphs.
