30th International Book Fair rumbles into action

The Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) – now considered the world’s largest literary gathering – opens Saturday, November 26 at Expo Guadalajara.

Apart from displays by hundreds of publishing houses in both Spanish and English, the FIL will bedazzle visitors with an extensive program of literary workshops, academic discussions, book presentations, children’s events and cultural performances.

FIL is not only a marketplace for book professionals to seal deals. It is also great opportunity for non-Spanish speakers to find books in English.  There will also be hundreds of children’s books from all over Latin America – great Christmas gifts for grandchildren.

Each evening, at 9 p.m., free music and dance presentations are held in the Foro Expo, by the entrance to the complex. This year is the 30th anniversary of the FIL, and the entire region of Latin America will be honored, instead of a single country or region.

Highlights (for older folks) include the Ballet Folclorico Nacional de Panama on Sunday, November 27, and the Orquesta Filarmónica de Jalisco performing Holst’s The Planets on Tuesday, November 29.

FIL is open to the public Saturday, November 26 and Sunday, November 27, and December 1, 2, 3 and 4, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.  On Monday through Wednesday, November 28–30, opening hours for the public are 5-9 p.m.  Entry cost: 30 pesos for adults.

Expo Guadalajara is located at the corner of Mariano Otero and Avenida de las Rosas.
