Dutch Ballet comes to town

Ted Brandsen boasts a lifelong involvement with the Dutch National Ballet, joining the company in 1981, dancing with them for a decade, becoming a choreographer and now enjoying his 14th season as artistic director.

He is passionate about the company, its dancers, impressive repertoire and the challenges involved in taking them to new frontiers – the latest one being Mexico, with dates at the Cervantes Festival in Guanajuato and the Teatro Diana in Guadalajara next week.

Talking with the Reporter from Amsterdam prior to the tour, Brandsen said 60-65 dancers will be coming to Mexico, including nine of the company’s 11 principals.

“Each of the principals is really amazing in their own way. They are all very individual and have special qualities to offer, and it’s one of the things that makes our company so exciting,” Brandsen said.

The Dutch National Ballet, of course, is where Guadalajara star Isaac Hernandez honed his talents before moving on to the English National Ballet a couple of years ago.

Brandsen worked with Hernandez and described him as “a wonderfully virtuoso dancer with a great temperament and stage presence … a very good classical dancer.”

With a company comprised of 30 different nationalities that are constantly changing, Brandsen see his role as a stabilizer and guide, “helping to make others shine.” As a choreographer himself, he likes to be one-on-one in the studio and believes the company is a “warm home” that allows its dancers to explore and develop their talents.
