Ballet in the park

The state’s only professional ballet troupe performs selected works in Guadalajara’s most popular park.

UdG Ballet Folklorico

The renowned Universidad de Guadalajara folk dance troupe continues its summer/fall season with two more shows in October. There’s never a dull moment watching these accomplished dancers. Patrons will see new chorography and costumes to mark the troupe’s 50th anniversary.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra

The first in a series of smaller “chamber music” programs featuring the orchestra’s leading players. Up first is a “jazz/pop” special that combines the orchestra’s principal brass musicians with the invited Jalisco Brass Ensemble. The program includes favorites such as Kandor’s “New York, New York,” Ellington’s “Come Sunday,” Abreu’s “Tico Tico” and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” as well as other gems.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra

Principal players only as the chamber music theme continues for the orchestra’s third program of the season. Small groups of musicians perform works by Mozart, Schumann and Schubert.

Live from the Met

The New York Met presents  Mozart’s “Don Giovanni,” with Simon Keenlyside in his first Met performances as the libertine title character.

Federico Ibarra’s “Despertar al Sueño,” a one-act opera in eight scenes, interpreted by JPO musicians Edgar Lany Flores on clarinet, Jean Carlos Coronado on cello and a pianist to be confirmed.

Jazz concert

The New York Jazz All Stars series, sponsored by the Universidad de Guadalajara and Jazz at Lincoln Center, presents the Luis Bonilla Quartet “Trombonilla”.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra

A Beethoven special commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Degollado Theater. Marco Parisotto conducts Beethoven’s Leonore Overture Nº 3 in C major, Op. 72b and the majestic Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125.  He is joined by Latvian soprano Maija Kovalevska, alto Cassandra Zoe Velasco, tenor Cesar Delgado and bass Grigory Soloviov. Also featuring the Zapopan Choir, directed by Timothy Ruff Welch.

Siddhartha the Musical

An original musical production by Chu Un Temple, and directed under the Fo Guang Shan Academy of Art of the Philippines. The musical is an adaptation of The Biography of Sakyamuni Buddha, written by Buddhist monk Hsing Yun, founder of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order in Taiwan.

Paco Padilla

Local folk singer Paco Padilla celebrates his 40th year in the music business with a special concert at the Teatro Degollado to benefit Guadalajara’s Civil Hospitals.  Padilla, who is also a respected ceramics artisan, is known for his urban narratives, indigenous themes and humor.

Othello

Ragnar Conde is the scenic director, while Marco Parisotto conducts the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra, in a full-blown production of Verdi’s opera “Othello,” based on Shakespeare’s famous work. A stellar cast is headed by U.S. tenor Issachah Savage in the title role and Latvian soprano Maija Kovalevska as Desdemona. U.S. baritone Michael Chioldi plays Iago.

The China National Traditional Orchestra, also called China National Orchestra, is a 110-piece orchestra of traditional Chinese musical instruments with an accompanying folk choir.

GR RECOMMENDS: Jalisco State Choir

Jalisco’s professional, operatic choir will sing an hour-long concert, “Cervantes & Shakespeare through choral music,” at the Expiatorio church on October 27. The group recently returned from Guanajuato, where they sang this concert in the Festival Internacional Cervantino, which this year celebrated the 400th anniversary of the deaths of Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes.
