MUSA’s current lineup of show stoppers draws vacation crowds

Perhaps the best piece of advice that can be given about seeing this summer’s offerings at Guadalajara’s Museo de las Artes (MUSA) is to take your time.

That goes both for the time you spend at the museum and the date of your visit, as the two current, contemporary art exhibitions (“Art + Politics + Natural Environment” by five international artists and “Pasión es Passio” by Carlos Vargos Pons) will show until the fall  – September 18 and October 30, respectively. However, summer is the time to take advantage of the museum’s extreme cool and to rub shoulders with the city’s sophisticated young people, who are coming in droves and taking in the shows in a contemplative manner, as I wish I’d had time to do.

Granted, these are not the easiest shows to grok; they have all the complexity and sometimes opacity that characterizes contemporary art. For me, one element of the mystery was figuring out the meaning of “passio” in the title of the Vargos Pons show. It was not in my Spanish dictionary and asking museum personnel, including some guards (who shouldn’t be expected to know), produced some incomprehensible or laughable answers, perhaps reflecting the fact that few people like to say “I don’t know.”
