Bernardo Bertolucci at the 30th Guadalajara International Film Festival

Renowned Italian film director and screenwriter Bernardo Bertolucci will be the star celebrity at the 30th Guadalajara International Film Festival, scheduled from March 6 to 15.

The director of movie classics such as “Last Tango in Paris,” “1900” and “The Last Emperor” (the recipient of nine Oscars in 1988), Bertolucci will receive the Premio Mayahuel Guadalajara Internacional for his contribution to world cinema and his acknowledged influence on many of the continent’s most important filmmakers.  The 73-year-old director is also expected to hold several masterclasses.

Italy is the guest country at the festival, which will feature a Spanish-subtitled retrospective of the films of Bertolucci and Bruno Bozzetto, considered a genius of Italian – and worldwide – animation.

Festival director Ivan Trujillo is reported to have watched 150 Italian feature films to select the 33 that will be shown in Guadalajara.  According to the Istituto Luce Cinecittà, they cover three years from 2012 to 2014 and “coherently represent the eclectic state of Italian film production today.”

In total, around 50 Italian films will be screened at the festival.

A delegation of at least 20 Italian authors and artists will be accompany Bertolucci on his visit to Guadalajara.
