Tea Party

The Lakeside Tea Party will meet Tuesday, September 11, 4 p.m. at Sunrise Café in Riberas del Pilar. The theme will be “What You Can Do to Influence the Vote in the USA.”

Electronic tools will be provided so that members can email and phone friends, family and others regarding the importance of the upcoming election. There will be a discussion regarding how to talk with disillusioned former Obama voters, the Republican platform and its differences from the Democratic platform.

The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) has announced the start of their next term of Spanish-language classes that will begin Monday, July 9. They will cover seven weeks of study ending on August 24.

Labor Day

American Legion Post 7 invites everyone to celebrate Labor Day with them at Morelos 114 in Chapala on Monday, September 3, cocktails at 4 p.m. and dinner at 5 p.m. The picnic fare will feature Italian-style submarine sandwiches (veggie burgers for those who prefer) with marinara sauce, green salad and peach liqueur over ice cream for dessert. Stan and Yvonne will be on hand with karaoke. Tickets are 120 pesos and they are on sale now at the post. The post has smoking and non-smoking areas. The telephone number is 765-2259.

Speaking Spanish

The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) has announced that the next term of Spanish language classes will begin on Monday, September 3 and will cover seven weeks of study, ending on October 20. The program uses the Warren Hardy Spanish language course that is designed for adult students. Several levels of learning are available as the students progress in the program.

The hula

Cruz Roja (Red Cross) Chapala will hold a Hawaiian Luau on Saturday, August 25 at American Legion Post 7, Morelos 114 in Chapala. The cocktail hour is from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., at which time the Fetia I Te Po Tahitian dance group from Guadalajara, led by Gabriela Alejandro Gorziez Guerrero and musical director Edgar Ramirez Ruiz, will perform. Hal Kaluhiokalani Matthews will play his ukulele and sing, joined by Louie Pavao and Marilyn Moss at 5 p.m. as  dinner is served. Donna Bento will give a dance performance accompanied by Kahale Camara on guitar after dinner.

Ante up for victims

You’ve got one more week to help out the families of innocent people killed during recent violence in the area. The Lakeside Victims’ Fund has been established to collect and distribute money to the families, many of whom are struggling to pay funeral expenses. As well as facing a loss of income from the deceased, the families, in many cases, have a need for psychological counseling that they can’t afford.

Brits meet

The Lakeside British Society will meet next on Saturday, August 4, 1 p.m. at Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 56 in Ajijic. The speaker will be Jeremy Dando, who is visiting the area and will present an overview of the design and development of cardiac catheters, including the time line needed for obtaining regulatory approval. Dando works for a major medical device manufacturer.

Cleanup effort

Some 50 Chapala tourist boat operators and several dozen volunteers joined forces early Monday, May 21 to clear rocks from the Chacaltita beach on the east side of the town pier. The city government provided extra manpower, earth movers and dump trucks to haul away nine loads of stones that have been exposed as the shoreline has receded during the peak of the dry season. The cleanup effort is scheduled to resume next Tuesday.

The Lake Chapala British Society will meet Saturday, May 5, 1 p.m. at Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57 in Ajijic. The menu for the luncheon meeting will be a choice of Mexican pork ribs (pibil style) and stuffed chayote and rice or white fish wrapped in Holy leaves (anise) with chayote and rice. Either choice comes with a small salad. The cost is 120 pesos, including tip. A third choice could be a large salad and dessert for 75 pesos. The dessert (Mexican flan) costs 25 pesos.

Raining cats

The Animal Shelter has a population of about 40 cats and kittens at the moment. They could certainly use more volunteers to sit and play with these fine felines, to keep them entertained and to socialize them for adoption.

Can/Am Day

Don’t miss the second annual Can/Am Day celebrating the United States Independence Day and Canada Day to be held on Monday, July 2 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS).

Early ticket sales are predicting good crowds coming to enjoy great food, entertainment and information, while supporting the good works that LCS is undertaking.

Entertainment will be provided by the Tall Boys Band. Roberto’s Restaurant will cater the food providing all-beef hot dogs and hamburgers, ribs, chili, potato salad, coleslaw and watermelon. Two cash bars will serve beer, wine and cocktails.
